A day with the Viet Nam Jeep Club
Okay I’m going to try this again! Special thanks to John, Duc, Juanle, and Trang and all the other members of the Viet Nam Jeep Club for their friendship, hospitability and sharing their day with me and my friend Tim. Boy do these guys have a passion for jeeps especially the 151’s, they get together almost every weekend for off roading, food, drink and they also plan several outing trips over the year. They tell me there are now about 100 restored Mutts in Saigon, many not in any club. One of the coolest things about a hobby like this is you can go anywhere in the world, seek out those with a mutt and your are instantly welcomed as a long time friend. Got a love it!!
Our day started with a gathering at a street side restaurant drinking coffee, talking, waiting to see who would show up, deciding a plan for the day and of course standing around and admiring each other’s Mutts
Line up as members arrive for the day’s events
Trang the “famous water guy” pulling his rig up on the sidewalk so we can get a better look! Trang did not join us for the off road adventure as he had his son’s birthday to attend. Good man Trang!
Me, Trang and John
Admiring under the hood of Juanle’s (red shirt) mutt Duc is in the green shirt. RICK this photo is for you, Juanle has designed a welding rig he can attach to his generator for field repairs.
Field Repair! Trang had a problem with his fuel pump so a mechanic that usually joins the group (carb and fuel specialist) does a repair on the spot, on the sidewalk!
We drive to 7th District to find a marsh, Doc proceeds without hesitation into about 3 feet of water. After about 100 yards he bogs down.
Juanle surveying the site and getting ready to go in for the rescue (I almost when with him!)
No worries, Juanle to the rescue but he also bogs down. Now the two heavy winch vehicles are stuck in the marsh, in 3 foot of water about 75 meters from hard ground and pointing in the wrong direction to make use of their winches!
Recover efforts begin, club member with Toyota and winch in position. Winch cable was accidently pulled of the drum while trying to reach Doc & Juanle. After many attempts it was successfully re-attached.
John with his mutt in hold position as attempts are made to use Duc’s winch for recovery. There was not enough cable to reach so two nylon straps were also used but one was too light and keeps failing. This effort was abandoned.
With winch fixed the Toyota is held by two vehicles as winching begins, but first lets pull it out of the marsh where he ventured a bit too far in effort to make the cable reach.
Recovery almost complete, both mutts close to hard ground
Juanle’s out at last and happy!
Duc’s mutt just out of the marsh
3 hours later we are all ready to head into town for food, drink & fun but Duc gives a filled marsh a try, bogs down and we quickly winch him out
Finally
The gang enjoying good food, Saigon Beers, and friendship!!
Mechanic on left, T John’s driver on right
Me in front of Juanle’s mutt, this is for all you SNORKEL lovers
My honorary Viet Nam Jeep Club membership plaque that I will soon affix to my Mutt
Thanks again for a great day and I look forward to seeing you all again upon my next return

I'll have to say great film, looks like those guys really had alot of fun, well you got wet too, I just wished I could understand the dialog, but their mutts had to very mechanically sound ,I think pieces would be flying off of mine,I find bolts lying in the driveway, well not no more, since I got the driveshafts balanced
