Memorial Day 2012

Unread post by Rainman » May 24th, 2012, 1:39 pm

Image I won't bore you all with my usual Memorial Day schedule, but I sure would like to encourage all you M151 owners to get involved with your local community parades or events. You don't have to be a veteran or a war hero, your jeep is what the folks will come to see. No matter if it's not nearly perfect, not all that pretty, or that it needs a paint job, show it off and watch the smiles of the faces of the kids as you go by. Yep, there's a high level of patriotism and usually a few older Vets that sure could use a ride in that convertible piece of history you keep in your garage. My hometown and many of yours have a parade or a noon flag raising at the local VFW or Legion. We now even have a Memorial Day Cruise-In with Military Vehicles as the featured vehicles of the night. Start now and get signed up for your local Fourth of July festivities. I'm sure proud my kids grew up knowing that Memorial Day was NOT just a 3 day weekend and a picnic to signal the start of summer. Show your true colors of Red White Blue and OD Green, and please get involved!

As the internet grows, so does my amazement of the creativity and extent of the special moments that can be captured in time. Peninsula, Ohio is a little valley community completely surrounded by a National Park. My kids went to school there and I coached youth baseball there for 5 years. I always make it to the small Peninsula Memorial Day Parade, especially when I have one of their own in uniform, home from Iraq riding along. This time I'm happy to say it was captured, edited, shared and well done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6ybBoMv8-c

I want to get back to a small town so bad! Rainman, That 57 Chevy in the picture before your ugly mug, something just doesn't look right. I know it is a poster but what exactly is that car. Do you know that person.

I think it is the 57 Chevy Black Widow Grand National Nascar racing variant or was made up to look like one. It looks blue though and the one I am thinking about was police car black with a white tail.

The Black Widow was built only for racing in the NASCAR series, used the standard, heavy framed cheap Chevy 150 Utility, a factory new two-door sedan, with a fuel-injected, 283 sb engine. The car was then stripped of everything 'street' by a racing shop and modified for racing. Wasn't around for long but won races in 1957

The clue for me and what may have caught your eye, RickF, was the high mounted round rear view mirror placement, so cool, and only attached there on that model as I recall. Later the street customs copied it. The rumor goes that everyone drove with the window rolled down and their arm sticking ou twith their t-shirt rolled way up, to use the door sill as an extra brace during the turns

Good video!!, I am glad you posted it, it went a little fast for me, I wanted to to study the cars and remember what they looked like,as I haven't seen such since the 60's and 70's but was glad the people turned out and participated in the event.
Thanks for posting it.

Damn Top! Caught me by surprise on that one. I didn't figure you to be the old time race car guru. At least American cars anyway, I know you like your Porsche's. Actually what caught my eye was the body side molding, it is different from what I am used to seeing.
