Against the "Moroccose"...the M151A2 !
Every year, at the end of the automn, the french offroader have a disease which is called the "Moroccose" ! the symptoms are classics: a necessity of sun, desert, sand with dunes, high mountains, large space, etc... the diagnostic is simple: take your MUTT and go to the "Morocco" !
Here is a short video of my last trip to the south of Morocco during ten days in last october. This is the crossing of the pass "Tizi-n'Ouano" (2900 m) in the High Atlas where the landscape are so wild and gigant like in the west of USA...

Michel,
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. Three questions however:
1. I don't see any support truck. Normally it is said a quarter-ton jeep cannot carry all the stuff (fuel, water, spares, food, tent) for such a trip ?
2. What make and model is the other "jeep" in tan color, the one with the tow bar in front?
3. What's the deal with so many look-alike Iltis?

Re: Against the "Moroccose"...the M151A2 !
Hello Horst,
Three good questions, I try to answer !
1)The technical assistance is organised with 5 engineers and 3 pick up 4x4: 2 Nissan (1 with shelter workshop), 1 Land Rover wearing the spare parts boxes of some participants. In case of breakdown, if it's impossible to repair on site, the vehicle is towed up to the onroad and load on a trailer + minibus for passengers which goes go to the basement of the stape of the day. In Average, on the trail, we are a maximum of one day from the onroad trafic.
The Mutt and the Willys Hotchkiss had there own spare parts boxes installed on the rear place with water (1 jerrycan 20 l+ 2 bottle packs 20 l) and fuel (2 jerrycan: 40 l + tank: 65 l), food, tent, bags, etc for an autonomy of 3 days (Main MUTT parts: water pump, fuel pump, coil, swiss ignition, plugs, front/rear shock absorber, axle/wheel bearings, brake/fuel flexible, inner tube, hose, set of gaskets,etc.).
It's clear than the jeep are heavy load for climbing the dunes... Flat inflate (0.9 kg) and speed are necessary because the Mutt and Willys have not so power than the modern 4x4. I cross my fingers: any mecanical problems and stuck in sand with the M151A2....
2)This jeep is a french prototype which has been developped when the french army have replaced the Willys Hotchkiss in years 70 by the winner P4 Peugeot Steyr. This unique exemplary is with two rigid axles and permanent transmission 4x4.
3)The association Savane Aventure have bought 14 Iltiss Bombardier to the Belgium army which are rent to the participants who have no 4x4 vehicles.
I hope to have answered to your interrogations; always interested by the Alps 2013 project the next summer ?
