Thanks!

I believe the star on the hood is too large by about 50%. Also, the "point" on the star should face toward the windshield, not toward the fron of the vehicle.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you asked. Also, I'm a n00b here, so what the heck do I know?

Overall, yours is a terrific looking example!

Lt Dan, your fairly new around here, and it's a rookie mistake. Opening the can of "your star's on upside down" is a conversation you won't enjoy and won't win. I never tire of it though, so thanks for the chuckle.

I REMEMBER WELL those star posts on this and the old site. Rainman is right- there is no 'correct' size, direction {star point forward or backward} or location {toward the front edge of the hood or centered}. At some point I found photos all variations on my unit's 151s in country in 1967-9
My own 2 151s have different ones and yet each time a vet sees them I am told told they are wrong!

I agree with everything said with one exception... there is a correct direction and size for the hood stars. It is clearly defined in the manuals for marking vehicles. In actual practice, i agree that you can find pictures with the star facing just about anywhere and any size they could find.

The star's upper point was supposed to point toward the radiator, forward enough to be seen with the windshield down, on Army vehicles. On Air Force vehicles, the star's upper point was aimed at the windshield, and was centered on the hood.

and there you have it lol. Our poor jeeps had the dubious distinction of having more stars painted on them than any other vehicle...

I agree with Jim, also the hood start was supposed to be 300mm across the straights and the small stars I believe were supposed to be 100mm but I stand to be corrected on that. I do have a photo some where of three jeeps parked in Saigon side by side with the hood stars different sizes and orientation

Sweet. Good job. If it cruises as good as it looks...then the operation was a success, doctor.

Hey, I **said** I was a n00b! And I guess I then went on to PROVE it.

Sorry if I gave offense. I was just remembering from "back in the day." But it's been a LONG time, and apparently, there was no one "right" size/orientation for the stars.

dan, i can guarantee you didn't offend me---i've always thought it was funny, and i'm pretty sure ray thinks so as well. when most of us wore the uniform, we spent an inordinate amount of time scheming or goofing off, at least when we were back in the world, and we couldn't have possibly cared less about star size or direction.

Yep Lt Dan, welcome to the club. There's a dozen more details that will never be hashed out because there are pictures to prove differently. It's not my saying, but I repeat it as much as anyone. "when it comes to M151's, never say never". :D Just when you think you've learned it all about stenciling, somebody finds another picture.
