Finally got to go out for a ride
Well I finally got to go out for a ride today. Took it to work and than took the missus out for a ride this evening. Most of the trails on my favorite back roads are flooded so I didn't get to go as far as I would like. This will be my last ride before my knee surgery so I got a couple pics by a lake. Forgot the camera so cell phone had to do.

Rick looks like you could use the fording kit ?
Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
One of the puddles had water even with the edge of the footwell, I ended up with wet feet. Backed out of that one and decided to give up on the trails.

That lake does actually have a road across it under water but it is not straight. It goes out from about 50 yards further down from where I am parked in the second picture out towards the center of the lake and then there is a small wooden bridge and right after that it makes a right and straight to that piece of brown land behind my antenna. I sure as hell wouldn't try it in my 151! I am sure the Vietnam guys would in a heartbeat. The military used to use these lakes for fording and amphibious practice years ago. The DEP would frown heavily on that now.

Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
Crawled up on a beaver dam with my iltis once with water up to the hood soon decided to back out after the beaver came out and slapped his tail on the top of the water smack. Guess beavers don,t like iltis. anyway I staled the jeep backing out of the water to fast it got in the breather vent on top of the hood and I had to use the starter to back out of that one.
Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
Started having all kinds of electronic troubles a year latter so now I make it a habit of not going in to deep of water anymore.
Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
That was the deepest this vehicle has ever seen but it was clean water and solid bottom, I would not try it with muddy water. I save that for the big block powered CJ.

Nice to see your Jeep!
And I agree, 40+ year-old vehicles and deep water are a BAD combination!

Rickf,
Your jeep looks good considering the last thing I remember was you having your jeep torn apart and having unsucessful results with replacment panels. Good luck with your surgery and wish you all the best with a speedy recovery.

Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
Thats more of an Iltis problem than a deep water fording problem.... They had plenty of issues with the Fuel Pumps and TCI Boxes croaking without warning, no fording required. Guys that own them seem to be quite emotionally attached to them, but you rarely find a soldier who served with them that thought they were great. Stock up on spare parts while you still canRCA827 wrote:Started having all kinds of electronic troubles a year latter so now I make it a habit of not going in to deep of water anymore.

Rick you know Water King in the Viet Nam Jeep Club would have been all over (or under) that lake One day I think that guy is going to put extensions on his fording kit, wear a scuba tank and really take it deeprickf wrote:That lake does actually have a road across it under water but it is not straight. It always amazes me to watch those videos. I remember nothing but mud at the bottom of just about any body of water over there besides the ocean. Where are they getting traction? These things are not as great as people make them out to be for off road ability, not with the stock open rears anyway.

Re: Finally got to go out for a ride
Rick the guys just go for it, treat them like jeeps and have a great time, John F can attest to that. But the couple times I have been with the club more time was spent on recovery than actual trail riding and I think that is half the fun for them also. Just being out and togetherrickf wrote:It always amazes me to watch those videos. I remember nothing but mud at the bottom of just about any body of water over there besides the ocean.
