My first MUTT - 1979 AM General M151A2 (Barstow??)

Unread post by pvtwinger » October 29th, 2013, 11:01 am

Hi,

I'm new to G838 and thought I would post a couple pics of the 1979 AM General M151A2 I got last month. I was told that it is a "Barstow" MUTT from the seller, but I cannot verify that. It is very clean, un-cut, un-restored (maybe spot painted here and there, not by me), zero rust, dents, bondo. It runs great and has been very well maintained by previous owner (have service records). It has 3100 miles on it and I have documentation that verifies the mileage. I added 5 new tires and the top and doors, and plan to leave it pretty much as it is.

I think I am gonna have a lot of fun with it.

If the numbers are correct on the hood it is 55 away from mine.
Some time check to see if there is a production serial number on the right hand side of the drivers footwell.
If it is send the number to the MUTTGURU and he may be able to further date the vehicle.
Have fun!

Hi,

Yes, I see the plate on the footwell but it is painted over and the fuel line is in front of it. I will try to get the numbers off of it. I do know that the number on the Form 97 that I have for it is 519897, and that is also the VIN on the title. I saw the Serial Number topic but I thought that was just for Army, not Marine vehicles.

Thanks.

Take some lacquer thinner and carefully scrub the plate to remove the paint only.
Try not to use abrasives.
There should be a model number on the first line starting with 116 or so .
The second line will be C or D 151 XXXXXX. That will be the body number that MUTTGURU can tell when it was made.
Since it already has a data plate this is just some more info .
A great find!

You got a form 97 for a late 151?! That is highly unusual. AND technically illegal although I would not worry about that part. You have it which is all that matters. The reason I say illegal is that buy that date ALL 151's that left the service had to be crushed so there would be no SF-97.

Hi lpcoating and others, thanks for the welcome. I am located near Macungie, about 15 miles southwest of Allentown, PA. I am posting a few more pics.

A little explanation of tthe Form 97. It was not made out to me but I did get it with the paperwork, and it is dated 2002. I do have a title for it.

I will work on removing the paint from the data plate in the footwell this weekend and report back what I find. Thanks for the info.

The Barstow mutts were exempt from the demil order, the thing with them was they had to be sold outside the US. Some of them made their way back or never got exported after being auctioned, kinda like the Marine Humvees that got released without being demilled.

That's not a beanie baby. That's my mascot who travels with me all the time, "Marvin The Martian".
I'm looking for an Illudium PEW-36 Explosive Space Modulator to add to the MUTT if anyone has one. :D

Looks like it very well could be a Mutt from the Barstow bunch. Hood numbers are in line and it has the "look". The SF-97 is further evidence that it could be from that stock. Likely sold to a stateside museum and released or sold some time thereafter.
