Evening Christmas Parade

Unread post by Joe » December 18th, 2015, 8:37 am

Parade took place in Lewes, DE where we formed up with the Harbor Defense Group from nearby Fort Miles. The different era jeeps depicted Harbor Defense activity at the Fort from WWII thru the Cold War. The working searchlight in the parade was one of 12 used during WWII at the garrison.

This is a 1942 Sperry Searchlight, 800,000,000 candlepower lamp with a 25 mile range. The carbon arc flame burns at 9,000 degrees F. and it still works great...... Each carbon rod provides 3 hrs. of burn time!!!

I remember as a kid seeing the searchlights at the malls and car dealers for sales. I am guessing you need to alert the FAA before firing that baby up? Especially in your area, a lot of air traffic in that corridor.
