M762 Question

Post by mutt and jeff » October 13th, 2020, 3:22 pm

Looking at my recent acquisition, a M762 and read the data tag and what I can find on the web, it is rated as a 3/4 ton trailer. But it is the same frame as the M416, which is only rated as 1/4 ton. What I can see and what I can find on parts lists is the same axle, leaf springs and shocks on both trailers. I know one is a flat bed and one is a tub, but the tub can't weigh that much to affect the load rating. And, the M762 has this large lunette tower on the tongue that must weigh as much as the 416 tub.

Any thoughts as to how the rating got raised for the flatbed? It may be a Humvee related thing, ie, no 1/4 ton vehicles anymore, so can't have any 1/4 ton trailers.

Ratings are usually based upon Axle, Wheels, Suspension and Hitch/Coupler. Thus, the lightest rating for any one of those four things (rather than the highest) would be the determining factor.

The reason an M416 is rated at 1/4 ton is because that is how much it is/was supposed to float with. An M762, which is the exact same thing minus the box (or tub, or whatever you want to call it) is rated at 1/2 ton. I have two parked outside, both original, and admittedly in my advanced years, I could be wrong on the 1/2 ton part, they cold quite possibly be rated at 3/4 ton.

I can remember reading a long time ago the m416 was rated to haul 3/4 ton(based on the leaf springs), to find the source would take some digging
