M416 with tailgate?

Postby on-to-berlin » August 13th, 2017, 2:46 pm

Are there any pictures of M416 trailers with tailgates while beiing in service? A lot of conversions like that were done
once they were privatly purchased so I was wondering if some conversions were done already while in service?
The reason I ask is that I just bough a nice M416 with a tailgate cut in. I want to put it behind my A2 and also paint it in MERDC. At the moment I think about closing the tailgate again since I like it better. But if there is any photographic evidence from the 70s or 80s I might eventually keep it that way.
Any input greatly appreciated!

If it was done the person doing it would most likely have been court martialed for destruction of government property. The trailers were made to float and the tailgate completely negates that.

Unless, of course, you happen to be the owner of an M416 modified for an AN/MRC-12..... in which case Lexington-Bluegrass Army Depot would have done the work for you :D

Is that even designated a 416? The whole rear end is different.

Some years back Jeff at frontline had a teletype trailer with a tailgate and elevated canvas top.
Had it not been so far away in would have been in my yard.
For what its worth there is another example of a 416 with a tailgate.

Live and learn. There were guys getting court martialed in the first Gulf war for putting boiler plate on Humvees. Can you believe it? Unauthorized modifications to military equipment.
