M416 info request on tools

Unread post by Bart1015 » August 23rd, 2016, 10:14 am

Hello everyone,

I have a M416 trailer that I restored a few moths ago. I entered it in a local MV show and was marked off some points for not having the correct tools with it. The TM (9-2330-251-14, dated ^ October, 1970) lists the basic issue tools are as follows:

Wrench, socket.
Wrench, open end, fixed.

I have the socket, what I need to know is more detail about the open end wrench. The book lists it as FSN number 5120-596-1370.

When I look up the FSN I can not find anything that would help me with locating the correct wrench.

Does anyone have one of these wrenches? If so, can you please tell me the size (both sizes) it should be?

If you do have one and are willing to part with it, please PM to advise me on the asking price.

Thank you

Brett

If they dinged you on the tools where did they say you were supposed to store the tools? If they were only judging the trailer then they can't say you should have the tools onboard the tow vehicle. I am not aware that the 416 had a tool box as the M-100 had.

The trailer does not have a tool box and I had the lug wrench onboard the jeep.

Lame, I know. But, thats ok I just need to find the items and put them with the trailer. I may have to use electrical tape to secure them to the draw bars. LOL

My TM is dated 1970 and it says the trailer should have the wrench and socket as part of the special tools and equipment for direct support and general support level maintenance.

I may be wrong but, I would think those tools would be used and maintained by the guys in the shop, not the guys in the field.

They told me the tools is the only category I was going to be marked down on. Otherwise, I had no further deductions and I should expect a high placing. I am still waiting for the score card and results to arrive in my mailbox.

Your judges are dicks! You can't judge a vehicle on something it is not designed to carry. IF it had a toolbox then I would agree. But, And here is the kicker, Those tools are the exact same tools you already have in the kit of whatever vehicle is towing that trailer. Think about what vehicles the 416 was designed to be towed by and look at their tool list. They already have the tools needed to work on the trailer of need be.

What you need to find is the BII. I would bet that the tools for the trailer are common to the 151 and are not a separate end item unless the trailer is issued to a vehicle that is not an M151.

Here is a link to the manuals section

The 416 was a 1/4 ton trailer and would have only been pulled by a 151 or a 422 Mighty Mite. That is not to say other vehicles did not pull them but that is the only other 1/4 ton vehicles that would be classed to pull it.

Take that manual section to the judges and tell them you want the award they owe you. And ask them to show you the BII list they are using.

The tool box on the M100 was for storing the inter vehicle cable on the early M100's. You could store tools in there I guess. Later when the cables were physically attached the the trailers I think there was a work order to remove the tool boxes.

Rick,

The M416 was the trailer for the M1009 CUCV also IIRC.

Brett.......The original manual of March 1962 shows two wrenches as follows:-

Wrench, socket, single-socket, T-type, removeable handle, 2 and 1/8 in, hex-shape socket, 3 and 1/2 in. nominal length overall, (wheel bearing adjusting nut).

Wrench, open-end, fixed, double open-end, 15 degree angle, alloy steel, 3/16 in. and 1/4 in.openings (brake shoe adjusting).

Thanks guys, I do agree the judges must have made a mistake. I am still waiting for the official results in the mail.

Ken, thank you for the tool description from the earlier TM. Fortunately, I do have the tools needed in my tool box.

This was my first judged show and I am still getting the hang of it. I was completely caught off guard when I was told about the missing tools. To make matters worse, I did not read the TM from cover to cover prior to the show. Makes for a difficult argument to win.

Lesson learned, ALLWAYS read the TM prior to the show. At least I will be better prepared to counter any point deductions.

Overall it was a great experience and I enjoyed every minute of the show. We had at least 5 other M151s. Its pretty rare to see more then 1 or 2 at any given event here.

The tools are mentioned in the Oct 1970 TM and again in the Sept 1990 TM but only as an NSN/NIIN and part number. There is no detailed description of the dimensions as I listed from the Mar 1962 TM.
There was an Apr 1978 TM and an Oct 1985 TM but sadly, I haven't been able to obtain copies of these manuals (yet) !
