trailer pop up

Unread post by Redlight » October 2nd, 2016, 7:07 am

I am planning to drive the MVPA Route 66 next year and want to tow my M416. I would like to use it as a pop up tent for the trip. Is there any design, pictures out there?
Thanks :D

I made a cover for the M416 and mounted a roof top tent on it.

Greetings Horst, How was the tent mounted on the trailer? When you were in the trailer, was it unhooked from the M151? When you were on the road did you remove the tent?
Thanks
Bruce

I did it straightforward and simple. Welded a frame out of angle iron, mounted the tent on two crossmembers and covered the rest with waterproof wood panels.

If I had to do it again, I would make it out of aluminum, the tent itself is already quite heavy and the steel frame does not help here.

To use the tent trailer without hooked up to the jeep, I made a custom jack to support the rear trailer crossmember so it sits on the wheels, the landing leg and this jack. The tent itself unfolds towards the rear of the trailer so I can keep the trailer hooked to the jeep. Access to the trailer bed itself is possible in both stored or unfolded position of the tent.

I installed 4 lifting eyes at each corner so I can lift the whole thing off the trailer when there is the need. I also added four tie downs to secure against the 4 corners of the M416, but as heavy as it is, not really needed.

There are many commercial versions of the same thing Horst made if you look through the four wheeling magazines but I guarantee they will be a lot more expensive than Horst's setup!
