New to me M416F trailer

Postby Redlight » January 10th, 2017, 9:54 pm

Recently acquired a fire service trailer via GSA Auctions. It needs to be repainted but there is no rust anywhere. I need to install a landing leg swivel and landing leg to make it 100%. Any used parts for sale? I have the data plate but is has been well painted. Any hints on how to remove the top layer of paint but leave the wording underneath? A second M416 with a cut tail gate sold for over $1200 . This one will be resold in the Spring as I have another M416 in the garage. They seam to multiple if I leave them alone. Pictures are on Boston-Craigslist.com under trailers for sale.

Yours sounds like the one I have. It was bright red when I got it but zero rust. I sanded down the red paint to get the numbers for the trailer but then ended up painting over everything and adding the numbers back. Is your goal to try to get down the the original paint and not have any red around?

Red.... yes, with GREAT care!. These plates are usually screen-printed, not the raised-lettering types on early M100 trailers, so once you sand the top coat of paint off, you can end up with the data erased too.

Instead of sandpaper, use nail varnish remover (Acetone) and take your time, use a clean cloth (dishcloth etc) slowly wiping the top coat evenly and thus removing a thin coat each time.If you start seeing black or silver, you should stop because that's the plate detail. Don't overdo the stripping....once gone never to return!

There's a different procedure for revealing the trailer registration number/US Military details on the body panels. When you start this task, let me know for further advice.
Safety note:-Use the acetone outside, wear a mask and rubber gloves
Request:- Please let me know what detail you find for my research. Thanks.

I did try the nail polish remover but only a small amount of red came off. This week end I will try full strength acetone and see how that works. Does anyone sell blank data plates for the trailer?

Try regular DOT-3 brake fluid, let it sit for a while and then rub it off with a rag. Have water nearby to neutralize the brake fluid. Brake fluid is a pretty good paint remover.
