Unread post by Pops506th » February 22nd, 2018, 2:05 am

Has anyone seen or heard of tandem set ups on M416's?

Considering the axle placement on a military trailer I am thinking it would be a scary ride. They would be fishtailing all over. On top of that the frame on a 416 is not very heavy angle iron and is not designed to have a hitch added to the back of it. You would have to build a whole new subframe under the first trailer to transfer the pulling load from the vehicle through the front trailer into the second trailer.

There was a kit produced to reinforce the frame on the lead trailer as well as a box to add a trailer light plug. I've seen pics of it done with either the WW2 trailers of the M100's. I was just wondering if anyone had seen it done with the 416's. I imagine you'd have to pack the front trailer pretty well to keep tongue weight on the towing vehicle with another trailer's tongue weight trying to pivot it up.

I was not aware of that kit. Short wheelbase trailers in tandem just don't sound like a good idea unless it is off road or slow convoy. And no brakes on the front trailer but real good ones on the back since the weight will be higher than the 151 pulling the train.

There was a tandem hitch Modification Work Order but I've only seen the one for the WWII jeep trailers.
There may have been a similar MWO for the M100 (I've never seen it) but I've never seen any kind of evidence that the M416-series trailers were involved. But the old saying still applies to all things mutt-related.... "Never say Never".

The tandem setup on a bantam is really neat. I am going to put a tandem kit on my bantam and then tow my M416 behind it during parades. You can do the tandem kit on a M416 without any problem. I just would not do any high speed driving.
