M416 Restoration

Unread post by Francis Marion » November 10th, 2009, 5:16 pm

Have a family of 3 and usually travel with at least one cousin or friend my son's age which means I need an M416 for the gear.

I live in the Salt Lake Valley (84118) and shipping costs from the East Coast has placed each one I have seen there well above their value. So, I'm looking to pay fair market value for a trailer in usable condition or better. I will restore and paint it along with my A1 if necessary. The closer it is to home (read, less it cost to ship) the more I will be wiling to pay. I'll looking to purchase within 30 days while I'm still earning enough to afford it.

Take a look at Mike_pop's post, I know it says NJ, but he transports stuff out to Nevada quite often, you might be able to make a deal with him....

Heck, there's places out west that sometimes families of 16 can ride in an El Camino. They don't need no schtinkin trailers.

I still have an M416 for sale in NJ and will be heading west at the end of May, unless I get some loads sooner than that.

Thanks to a tip from the other G, I won this trailer from a GSA Auction in Phoenix. I paid more than I wanted to for it at $625 but really wanted to have one in my possession before leaving my current job. I'll have to drive down to pick it up myself in order to reduce shipping costs enough to make it worth it.

I intend to use this as a practice piece before turning new tools loose on my MUTT.

There are 2-3 others on GSA still. I think they were all up in the NE?

I hate to say this Francis but that was a lot of money for that much damage! There were much better ones out there for a lot less.

Looks like Rainman's been there giving the suspension a work out.  I think Seabee can help you straighten up the tub with his hammer.

I've seen them better for less too but nothing out west lately and an extra $600 just to ship one from back east made this one worth it. I was also under a little pressure just to get one before I gave up my current job. I'm just happy to have one at the moment and figure that this tub will be easier than my MUTT to learn body work. Now I just need some body tools and a welder...

Hey FM,
I plead not guilty to that damage  but glad you hooked up with a trailer that fit your time frame. There are always going to be other deals that sound better, but if you got what you wanted, when and where you wanted it, your the only one the deal had to please. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with that much work, but saw cstaup bang a trailer back into shape with relative ease. He did a great job on it too. Just like our 151's, there are replacement panels and floors available for your reconstruction as needed. I got hung up with my current M416 trailer restoration this past year due to the fact I had pulled the tub, then used the frame to transport and store a NOS 151 engine on until a couple of weeks ago. Got the engine moved to a stand, and now with snow and freezing temps on the way, I'll have to wait till next year to finish this one up. You'll have this one done by then. Congrats on the new purchase. We want pictures as your project continues. :D

Francis, I think Rainman wanted your tub........and is now dreaming about it. And yes, just a couple of "pings" with my hammer, and it'll be ok. Just let me know, my hammer is available right after I use it on Rainman to get his attention. Seabee
