M416 Draw Bar Parts

Unread post by wwitten » February 18th, 2011, 8:54 am

Have wanted to add a M762 flat bed to my collection for some time now.
Unfortunately have not been able to find many candidates/options. Considering
restoring a very civilianized M416 which needs the complete draw bar replaced
(ie channels, lunette, drawbar casting, landing leg, safety chains, etc). This is
in addition to the typical work such as restoring the 24 volt electical wiring
and lighting, potential suspension work, new rim/tires etc.
But the prices I've seen for the draw bar replacement parts alone (ie more than
I paid recently for a complete M416) puts the resoration viability in question
unless someone might have a trashed trailer with a functional lunette, casting,
leg etc that they would want to sell. By the way I'm located in North Eastern
Illinois.
Any and all leads appriciated.
Thanks

Hey WW,
I see in your other post you located an "M416 rolling frame", congrats! When I read you were looking for an M762 trailer I thought "get in line" :D Did you turn up any M762's on your search? Been looking for one of those for better than 2 years as a special purpose trailer to pull behind an M151. I've considered modifying a standard M416 frame with a flatbed and fenders, but a 762 would be absolutely perfect for my needs. Your going to have to post pictures of the new addition once you get it home to IL.

Rainman,
Been looking for years also. Whenever I start searching usually find one that was for sale last month and now gone. Will be glad to post once I get it home.

Thanks Rick but I already own an M101 and it gives my A2 a hernia just pulling it around.

Besides having to swap out the axle of an M116 to match wheels and tires and chopping the whole thing down to reduce the width as well. I'd have to do a flop on the over/under on the spring mod. An M762 is a 1/4 ton trailer and already is setup for the same width and wheels as the M151. The 3/4 tons are too wide, to heavy and too high for use as a funeral trailer in the 1/4 ton towing vehicle class. If I was towing with an M37 or CUCV, I could get away with a 3/4 ton trailer weight, but still too high and wide for a 30" wide cargo. With lots of thought and research Image
An M762 is just the perfect trailer for the mission. I'm not willing to sacrifice one of my fairly good M416 tubs to donate the floor and fenders.

Rainman, I agree I've looked into other sized trailers, but anything larger than the 1/4 tons are too big for a M151. You noted you did a funeral trailer. That sort of what I'm trying to set up for our local Memorial Day parade. Have pulled the M416 with (2) stretchers laid across the bed to sort of bring it home to those watching what the day really means......Actually got some flack last year....to much reality. Not planning on destroying a good tub here, but either going to use a 16-18 gauge sheet for the floor or maybe see if I could buy a replacement floor for a M416 tub. As far as the fenders figured I could weld a backing plate to the existing fenders. Won't have the additional lunette rig for towing behind bigger vehicles as the M762 had, but the day I come home with a Deuce and a half will be the day that my sleeping bags and tents will become my permanent address

Bill, your screen name looks familiar, I think you bought an M416 from me. Did you come to Detroit to buy a trailer one winter?
