M416 Trailer Project

Unread post by Rainman » December 11th, 2011, 5:33 pm

While I have the time and access to the pictures, here's a project I worked on in 09. This is the trailer
that went with me on my little portion of the Trans Continental Convoy, and has also done 71.5 MPH. :D
Image
You guessed it, I found this M416 in a farmers pasture, once used to haul wood behind a tractor. Paid $375
Image
Step 1 begin the sanding to reveal the original stars and number locations so I can put them back like original.
Image
PB Blaster in hand I took off the tub and headed to the spring shop to rebuild the springs. No DIY this time, I had money in 09.
Image
A coat of epoxy primer and time to take care of some "in service" damage the Army never fixed. Banged out what I could.
Image
Damage repaired with 2 coats of 24087 and replaced the undercoating on the tub. This trailer goes with my 64 Kaiser.
Image
Patched up a few frays in the harness and M561 tail light lenses installed on the original light housings.
Image
Reassembled with all new grade 8 hardware. I've never re-stenciled it so it still looks like this.
Image
Adjustment the brake and repacked the bearings. It tows straight and is not a useless piece of equipment for me.
Image
I tow this thing all over to rallys and events, especially when camping to comfortably carry all my stuff.
It cost me more than I expected to complete and now I have another 416 to do as well as a M762 project.
