picking up first M416

Guys
This Thursday I will be traveling up to Altoona, PA to pick up my first M416 1/4 ton trailer. I've never owned a trailer (any trailer) before so this is a new experience for me. I have some questions although reading through some of the threads below has answered some of them for me (thanks to those that went before

).

1) Are the hubs on an M416 trailer the same as what's on a mutt? How about the rims (they look the same)?

2) I know the M416 has a "parking" brake handle, but does it have service(?) brakes that activate when the towing vehicle (M151A2) starts to brake (like a civilian trialer)?

3) I've read that the shock absorbers used on the M416 trailers are different from those used on the mutt. Has anyone found a source for them? Civilian cross ref?

Exceptionally straight. The wheels are the same as the mutt. The hubs are different. You have the early version without the service brakes. Overall a nice looking trailer. Get that rusty bed taken care of quickly and you should not have any issues. Check the wheel bearings before towing it home. I did not notice in the pictures but if the brake is not on do NOT try it, if the cables are sticky then it could jam and you would have to deal with it before coming home.

Provided the trailer is fully restored (in the future) if I am towing it behind my A2, it adds nothing to the braking ability of the jeep? Is that correct? As for getting it home, I'm actually towing it home on another trailer so there shouldn't be any problems (famous last words).

Your trailer doesn't have the surge brake so no help stopping. I pulled mine home from NJ to OK with my Dakota. No problems. You just need to remember how to use the trailer correctly. There is an article in one of the MV mag this month about trailers

These trailers tow very well so towing it with the mutt is no problem. No you will have no extra braking from the trailer but the whole trailer only weighs maybe 600-700 lbs.. Now if you load it down, that is where the extra braking is nice.

Check the manuals section of this forum and download the 416 manual. It has almost all the answers to the questions you asked.

The trailer is very light weight and it's easy to forget that it's back there. It's so light that I often just drag it around by hand.

Thanks, FM. I'll do that. got the trailer home last night and had a friend help me man handle it off the tow dolly and into the backyard. They are light aren't they?
