Trailer options in the UK.

Unread post by Tootallmike » May 22nd, 2008, 3:35 pm

Since the 70s the British military have used what is commonly known as the 'Sankey' trailer which is towed by the various versions of Land Rover. It is a 1/2 tonne capacity trailer built by GKN Sankey (who also built 432s etc.), with an all-steel body and employing short wheelbase Land Rover wheels. There is also a 'wide-track' version which is slightly wider and therefore more stable, with a tailgate. The advantage of the Sankey over an M416 is the full width body. It also has mechanical overrun brakes, ratchet and pawl handbrake, 1 front landing leg and 2 rear legs. The best thing is the price: the military have released thousands of these in the last few years and this one cost us just £50! (about $100!) It's rusty round the edges but who cares at that price...

As can be seen from the pictures it sits fairly level behind the MUTT - it should be pointed out that this is a steep hill and the trailer is stuffed with camping gear for this weekend hence the back of the MUTT is sitting lower than normal. It tows very well behind the MUTT although the weight shows on hills.

Looks like it would be pretty stable.
