m416 with tail gate and radio m112 setup

Unread post by Macdog530 » January 25th, 2016, 3:12 am

Interested in info on 416 with tail gate and data plates for radio am/mrc112 holes at front tub indicating bracket for radio?generator? Tailgate nicely done by/in bluegrass Lexington Kentucky. Squared off back at tail gate, with lights and blackout. You gata see the gate chains and latching method. Extra aluminum tublear top holders welded to steel at each corner. Bolted on. M151 type brakets for lifting also at each corner. Serial number 020...that's about all the modifications.

Well can't seem to post the images... Help?

You have to post your pictures to an online site like Photobucket first and then copy and paste according to the directions of the photo site.

OK many thanks, will have to look into this pic problem, just joined printus? Think that's what it was called, if not will try to get the pics to you all. Don't hold your breath I'm chalanged sometimes in these maters, who would have thought I used to program fire alarms- it will come back to me. In the meantime do any of you out there know about this m416 with tail gate...did read about one so-called m416 in Utah with same, but radio-111; not 112...much thanks.

416's never came with tailgates. If it has a gate then it was added after it was out of the service. An M-416 is designed to float so it has no gate.

The m416 was indeed modified by the military (I think Army) to include a tailgate.

The model number, or the complete telegraph system was called AN/MGC-34.

The tailgate was cut and the sides of the trailer was reinforced. On all four lower corners were fitted with tie down brackets. The brackets had one half inch holes which would accept a D-ring type of tie down, sort of like our M151's bumper tie downs.

On each upper corner of the tub was a short vertical tube with an inside dia. of one inch. These tubes were used to support an enclosure for the operator and the equipment.

The rear frame of the trailer had a landing leg that folded towards the axel. This would be lowered along with the front landing leg to create a stable platform.

There is little known about this unit and I have only been able to find some info about how they are to be tied down during an air drop.

I bought this type of trailer at a county auction and it was missing the tailgate. I did not know what I had at the time and I cut off all the extra stuff and welded a new rear panel to it. Now I have a standard M416 which was originally a Military modified M416....

I belong to a Yahoo group "M416 1/4 ton trailer group" and there is a photograph of one there. That is what got me looking into what I had.

Man your description is right on, but did the pictures have the canopy and equipment? Man, this is it... Much thanks...I'm not going to change it. If it weren't for the chains I believe the tail gate on mine would have disaperd also; it had door hindges/ funny without the screw holes x4hindges...The rear landing all the tubes and support all described well. I got to post pics of the gate, for all to see: this would be the way to do it if you were to hack a 416 like I see so many... Now that I looked it was made in bluegrass Lexington Army base/depot...Lexington Kentucky. Any further info would be exilent...
Well its a edit: I'm brain dead when it comes to joining yahoo...gotta try to see some real pics of the trailer all dune up. Guess I have some homework to do...at any rate much thanks to those of you that already gave me more insite, and that their is a 416 military build up with tail gate. Many thanks... Stat tuned I'm going to try to post some pics.

I had an AN/TSQ-114 trailer that was a dedicated radio trailer with a gate but it was NOT a 416. It was a purpose built trailer. I would like to see pictures of this MGC-34, I can find no reference or NSN on it anywhere.

Rick,

http://www.quartermaster.army.mil/adfsd ... 8chap6.pdf

Chapter 6, it shows a picture and a description of the unit.

The trailer on Yahoo Groups:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showpho ... r&cat=4159
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showpho ... r&cat=4159

My trailer as I picked it up at the auction yard before and after resto. There were no data plates on my trailer, thats why I incorrectly believed it was modified after service.

After rebuild:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showpho ... r&cat=4159
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showpho ... r&cat=4159

During the rebuild, I used NOS wiring, NOS shocks, I made the light brackets and re-welded and filled about 30 holes which were poorly welded closed by the PO (county). I installed the military tie downs on the lower outer panels. BTW, these tie down are awesome and were an authorized US military mod for our trailers.

To add a little fuel to the fire,
Frontline had some of the complete ttrailers with raise up canvas tops and model 28 teletype.
Some point years later went back to inquire about them and they were all gone.

That is very interesting, I remember these trailers coming up for discussion on the boards before, specifically the 503. I also remember everyone saying they were a bubba special. I find it hard to believe the military sanctioned a trailer modification without giving it a new number or at least a suffix. So you are saying the data plate for the trailer on the front left frame rail is still saying it is a M-416? I see in the first link that the manual is a field manual, is there a TM for that unit? Or maybe a MWO for the trailer, that would explain the lack of change in the 416 designation.

This is it but also mine has data plate rear original m416 at tail gate, front big scomatic plate, below 112 bluegrass #0020, on tung frame #0020...can I e- mail it to someone? So they can post pics? Much thanks info. Sheds light on much of the holes in tub, but new questions arise about other holes and a brakit in front inside center in line with lunet. Someone sandblasted the lower data plates, and the others are hard to read; put silicon spray on it, helped a little. Don't see any of those #s mod28teletype MGC-34.
Only am/mrc112 will look at closer my photos are not clear as data plates are weatherd.
Was hoping it was older, I have also a m151a1--- shout out to muttguru for help in locating year from serial numbers some time back; many thanks ---Dec 1966...so I wanted the m416 to go with the m151a1
