how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
Anybody has a good idea how to paint the white lines which mark the areas to apply the 4 color camo? Looks like they were done by hand but not with a brush, given how uniform the width of the lines are. I tried to replicate them with a brush but they just don't look right. I had to repaint a few areas of the jeep back in the day and since then I am missing those lines at the rear of the jeep.
Pictured are the original lines on my 151

Re: how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
Hello Horst.....
the lines are originally drawn in chalk, so that alterations and amendments can be easily made. Once the lines are correct, they should be carefully replaced by a marker pen. There are WHITE marker pens available (not the chalk-pens).... look at the blackboards outside your local pub/beerkeller and you'll see the waterproof white markers used for "menu of the day" etc.

Re: how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
good idea, I will look at such a marker pen. The lines you can see in the photo are how they got out of Barstow.
BTW, which brings me to my next question. What is the base color used for the 4 color camo? Apparently the USMC / Barstow 151 were originally painted in semi-gloss OD, as still present on the underside of the jeep and under the hood. Seems like later on they were painted in this new, flat and lighter green and then those lines were applied. When I got this jeep, there was for example a lot of overspray of this new green on the tires.
Initially I thought this is CARC 383 and that is what I used to paint in the areas it needed it, like the rear. I used real CARC but I tend to believe that this is not what the USMC used (but "Forrest Green" ?)

I used chalk but did not realise that the chalk lines would show up through the paint! Just a word of warning...

Horst, I am surprised at you. There is a paint manual in the Wiki! That said I am not sure if it has 151's but it does have vehicles from that era. If you have a projector or some form of modern wizardry that only young people know about for projecting images you can take a picture of a camo 151 and then project that image on yours for the exact look you need.

According to the US Marine Corps, the base colour was FS 34052 with Black areas and markings in FS 37038.Horst wrote:good idea, I will look at such a marker pen. The lines you can see in the photo are how they got out of Barstow.

Re: how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
thanks all so far. Just to be clear, I will not paint the 4 color camo but leave the jeep prepared for it as it left Barstow

Re: how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
If you want you can use chalk and apply clear coat maybe?
This is how I did my M416 Trailer recently. I was using chalk as well. Worked well for me so far. It takes some time until you find the right movement in your hand so to speak.

Honestly I am not 100% sure if 34052 is correct, looks like much darker to me?muttguru wrote:According to the US Marine Corps, the base colour was FS 34052 with Black areas and markings in FS 37038.Horst wrote:good idea, I will look at such a marker pen. This is how I got the 151 in 2004 from Commerce in the Netherlands. Windshield was taken from a different jeep as the original was crushed. (as a side note, you can also see the oversprayed registration number and oversprayed markings on the bumper, I was able to sand away and restore the number but not the bumper markings. Also visible tire markings on the front fender and hood, they stacked 2 jeeps in the shipping container. Last not least it can be seen that a mount was removed from the rear as this was a MRC-83 jeep)
In fact it stayed in this color until last year when I treated it with Ballistol, a very light oil. Idea came originally from Mr. Dibbles who used Pledge, a wood polish. This took away the dull look

Re: how to paint the white lines for 4 color camo?
Hello again Horst...... if you paint your vehicle using FS 34052, then leave it out in the hot dry atmosphere of Barstow MCLB, in 10 years time, it will look exactly like your vehicle appears now.Horst wrote:[
