wheel drive shafts

Re: wheel drive shafts
I see only one thing that is an obvious "problem" and that is the first video clip. I'm guessing something really abrasive made its way into the splines and scrubbed away at them for some time ruining that tolerances.
However, as Rick said, those splines are not going to fail. If you are not yet ready to replace that worn assembly, and you aren't using the front drive that often, simply install it up front.
Cheers,
TJ

The first two clips are two different shafts (drivers + co-drivers side) as well as the last two clips are.
As the english language is not my native, could you please explain a bit further:
All the shafts had been greased up some days ago and only some Yards were driven after that when the clips were recorded.
Which shaft would you keep an eye on? 1st or 2nd clip? And - what is much more interesting for me - why?
Why are the u-joints the weakest point? I'm driving my mutt for only 2 1/2 years now, but did not have a problem with an u-joint ever.
I don't know what caused the damage to the yoke in the last clip. Was already there when the car came to me. The cups are still seated well as far as I can evaluate.
Rick, did I understand you right: you state that the radial play (twisting the two parts of the shaft with each other) is in an normal range?
Thanks a lot again.
Sorry I did not get right back to you, recovering from a hip replacement and not on the computer as must as usual. The first video was the one that caught my eye, but as TJ said, even though the play is on the high side they are not going to fail. Over here axles are readily available, I don't know about there. I would just look for good prices and when they show up then pick up a set of axles and make these your spares. The u-joints, specifically the ones at the wheel ends, are the weak points because they operate at close to the limit of their travel. Most u-joints on cars and trucks operate within 25% of their rated offset but these are closer to 70%. As long as you keep them well greased then you will have no issues with them. George from Holland puts a TON of miles on his Mutt and has no issues. But he is always on top of the maintenance. Here is his contact info in case you need it. http://www.g838.org/memberlist.php?mode ... ofile&u=82. Remember that you have Horst from the forum who lives in Munich who can always give you good advice in your native language. Here is his info. http://www.g838.org/memberlist.php?mode ... ofile&u=34

Re: wheel drive shafts
Thanks Rick. I’m way south of Hamburg, and a couple hours from Munich. I just figured if he was close to Furth/Nueremberg, I might be able to check out that unusual spline issue.

Re: wheel drive shafts
Hi Vin,
I know: way too late, but Fürth is only about 80km far from my location.
Arrrghh....for You shurely just a - what we like to say - "cat's jump"
Too bad that I was too busy the past weeks to check back here frequently and do a quick response, sorry!
