Hercules g1600 engine
This is from a post on Facebook. Anyone have knowledge of this. I have not seen any of this formation about this on G838

The Caterpillar 1404 is said to be a rebranded Hercules G1600 with some differences.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
That is interesting. I did a quick search for the G1600 and here is a video I came up with. This place is not all that far from me but the video is a couple years old. I may look into it a little more. That head really has me interested! Not to mention the 12 volt components like the distributor and coil. If this stuff can no longer be reliably produced then this could be an option.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
Radiator had a pin hole in it when I first got it. Took it to a local shop which is in a heavy industrial/oil field area. Owner took one look at it and said he could have my rad fixed while I waited and I'd have my fork lift back up in running in no time. Always wondered about that but never pursued it further.
Rick check out bottom post here - https://www.arboristsite.com/community/ ... 00.144989/G1600 CAT 1404
The G1600 is a four-cylinder engine displacing 163 cubic inches. Its horsepower rating is a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 65 horsepower. Hercules states this engine is used on pallet trucks (also called hi-los), generators, some Jeeps, and wood chippers.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
Ok, So you tell me, same engine? https://www.wincogen.com/wp-content/upl ... manual.pdf. Sure looks like it to me with the exception of the head and bell housing. I will bet that that engine would bolt right in and you could bolt on the military bell housing and transmission and flywheel. Using that head you could make a header for it and use a better carburetor. The main problem would be carb clearance. I see they have both downdraft and updraft manifolds but I have never seen any modern automotive style updraft carbs. They are all industrial fixed speed setups for power units.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
That is where I buy my rebuild kits for the carbs I rebuild. The last time I talked to John there he told me that Zenith only had a few of those carbs left and that they had no intentions of producing anymore. So I don't know how old that ad was you looked at but the info I got was from last August or September. That was when I found out that Zenith DOUBLED the price on the carb kits!!!!!!! I no longer keep ten in stock! I order them on an as needed basis when I get a rebuild job!
That price on the carb is 65.00 more than it was back in September so they are going to milk then out for maximum profit just like the carb kits! They are not selling carburetors to manufacturers anymore so they are hurting but they know that if people with vehicles that need carb have to have one they will pay out the arse. Since I had to raise my price to 200.00 because of the kit increase I have not gotten a single rebuild job. They killed my business. I guess Brooks is still doing alright since he had a massive load of stock. But he will have to pay the increase also, they all come from the same place.

So, who is going to be the first to convert to propane? Bet that cures carb problems.

I thought that was one of the links earlier in this topic? Or do you have a different one?

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
This is the first time this has come up as far as I know. I bought a 151 engine with an unknown civilian style distributor about a year ago. maybe you are thinking of that one?

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
always something new to learn. The way I see it, this Hercules 1600 engine is still different from the M151 engine, but they share a lot of similar design elements. Which should be normal given that every engineer / design company will re-use proven designs. Still in my opinion does not change the fact that the 151 engine, as we know it, was only used in that said 151 jeep.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
True, But I am looking forward. What happens when all of the US made coils dry up and people get tired of putting in a new Chinese one every week? Same with the electronic ignition modules that are now exclusively coming from China. Or the distributor caps that I have heard a lot of problems with. This stuff can all be replaced with the distributor from the g1600 engine and run on 12 volt. The guy did call me back today but I was tied up with something else and did not get a chance to return his call. I will try tomorrow. The starter would be the only problem as far as a 12 volt conversion. Yes, I know. Some die hards will say you cannot convert to 12 volt and still call it a M-151. Fine, then you spend a small fortune on rare parts that you will be afraid to run and call it a M-151. I will save a fortune on spark plugs, I forgot to mention them above, and all of the other stuff not to mention the second battery. Just something to think about for the more practical of us.

Re: Hercules g1600 engine
Just a couple of questions/observations. I imagine that the distributor can work with 12 or 24V so I guess the need for conversion would be the coil? As it sits external to the distributor it should be easy enough to find a suitable 24V coil? If so, as you say, it could be a good solution if needed.
