A2 Wiper Motor Power in A1 Mutt

Unread post by jim4164 » February 22nd, 2019, 7:01 pm

The PO of my M151A1 installed a windshield from an A2. The wiper motor doesn't work. I have a replacement wiper motor assembly to install but am wondering about how to provide power to it, since the A1 used vacuum wiper motors, so the A1 wiring harness probably doesn't include a power supply line. So what is the best way to power the A2 wiper motor? Thanks for your help.

You can get "T" connectors for the packard plugs on the wires and you can T into the fuel pump wire where it plugs in under the dash. Or, If you have gone to a mechanical fuel pump you can reroute the wire that went to the fuel pump and use that.

Thanks for your help. This sounds like a simple job. Just so I have a plan:
My first step is to disconnect the fuel pump power supply line from behind the dash. Is that line easily identifiable or trial and error to find it? I assume it is connected to the ignition switch and sends power to the wiper motor only when the ignition switch is on.
Next, plug in a packard T (3 male or 3 female or a combination?) connector to power behind the dash and reattach the fuel pump packard connector to one of the remaining 2 (M or F) parts of the T.
Next, attach a wiper motor power supply wire with a packard connector to the remaining (M or F) part of the T.
It appears that the other end of the wiper motor power supply wire will need a round female connector that can be attached to the motor's recessed male power terminal.
Is the appropriate round socket connector to connect to the wiper motor a commonly available type?
What should be the correct wire and connector gauges for this installation?
Lots of questions but just trying to get the parts together before I go get the Mutt out of winter storage. Every job is simple until it gets started.

You pretty much have the gist of the wiring down pat. I have some links somewhere for the connections, I will have to dig them up and I will post them here. One thing to be aware of on the fuel pump connection is that you will only have power to the wipers while cranking the engine and once you have oil pressure. This is due to the oil pressure safety switch for the fuel pump. This is not going to be an issue for most people since most are not using the wipers when the engine is not running.

Interesting that loss of oil pressure would apparently, at least temporarily, kill the fuel pump. Is the later mechanical fuel pump system also handicapped that way?

No. The mechanical fuel pump will run until the motor seizes!

The idea is that if you roll over the pump will not keep pushing fuel out through he upside down carb. If you roll over with a mechanical pump the engine is going to stall almost immediately from flooding at the carb and with no engine running the fuel pump will not be pushing gas.

Why not Tee off the load side of the ignition switch?
Also consider a breaker in the circuit.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I don't want to burn up the Mutt!

The load side of the ignition switch would be the side that becomes energized when the switch is turned on, which would be the side to which the fuel pump and the wiper motor would be connected. Right? I think that is what was suggested above.

Regarding a breaker: I assume a breaker could be attached in-line in the wire just before the wiper motor. What amp level should the breaker be to protect the wiper motor and the rest of the circuit. Is there a standard model breaker I should look for? Does the A2 use a breaker in the wiper motor circuit, (if so what is its part number), or is it connected through a fuse box? What gauge wire would be appropriate for this wiper motor installation?

Wiring this way eliminates the issue of power being controlled by fuel pump source.
A15 amp circuit breaker like the ones under the dash is all you need.
Also needed is the Tee .
14 gauge twisted wire to fabricate three jumpers.
One goes fron switch to Tee Another goes from Tee to breaker.
The third goes from breaker to wiper motor.
For ease of assembly and appearance you should use GI pins and rubber boots.
Hope that this makes sense.
If you need parts to make it up PM me .
I have all that you need.

If and when you replace the front half of the wiring, you will probably end up using an A2 harness as that's about all that's out there. There are some A1 harnesses out there but they are far and few and very expensive compared to the A2 harnesses. Plus, the A2 harness will have the wire for the wipers built in. I used that wire for my wipers, two 24 volt wiper motors I bought on Ebay.
$28.00 plus $9.00 shipping. (Not mine)
