The quick and easy way to tell is the bolt pads for the exhaust are much wider. The area where the exhaust manifold seats is wider also so you will be able to use an exhaust gasket kit without worrying about intake leaks.

Update: A2 take-off head came in from Red River (looks great!) but I'll probably lap the valves since it's easy to do now rather than later. Gasket kit, rings, flex-hone, various sprays and lubes now on the shelf. Pulled the #2 piston out and removed the rings this evening after work. What a pita. Top two rings were stuck like chuck but I finally got them off. I'm hoping 1 and 3 are better but guessing 4 will probably be about the same. Saw TJ had door frames I thought were cheap so ordered a couple. Slow and steady. Saw this the other day and made me smile...

Hey Rickf, I decided to put enough of it back together just to see what the compression was like on them now after new rings and honing. Despite the pitting on #2 (large area but shallow) and 2 tries setting the valve clearance correctly this time I got
125 - 113- 124 - 114
(if autozone sold me a good gauge). I may be able to squeeze a little more out lapping the valves. Bonehead move to run as is? With my limited knowledge of engines I'm guessing she'll just burn oil a bit on #2 or am I looking at a major disaster?

No major disaster. It will burn oil and possibly foul plugs but nothing will break apart. The top ring will probably rock in the ring groove and wear the groove in the piston but to salvage the engine you would need new pistons anyway and that one is looking pretty sad as it is. Run it and keep your eyes open for a good take out engine.

New versus old radiator mounts. Not sure if they are original to a straight m151 or someone made do.

Doing what I can when I find the time. Today some good news. I finally see the hood numbers and they match the dash plate. 3 inch high letters and pretty much almost down to the metal. Neon orange definitely came at a later date. The underneath side of the hood appears to have stayed green throughout its life but under a brushed coat I found hand painted letters in neon orange that I believe says Kelly + Phil's.

Most M151s with that NSN have the Serial number and registration number as the same (not always but they do in the "2D" range).
There's 2D1472, but then it jumps to 2D1722. There's also only 79 records listed for this NIIN.
Sorry I can't help any more.
Edit Note: a1's and a2's have separate NSN#s so those obviously are not in the 79 straights he has info on.

After a bad week, got off at noon and went and spent some quality time on the Swamp Buggy. After working here and there I finally got down to seeing if I did okay with my tear down and rebuild. Happy to report...
She's Alive! Have to run with the choke slighty pulled out but she ran a good.
Thanks rickf and everyone else here for all the advice. Now to move on to the brakes.

- wrong gas cap
- early M151's had no turn signals - Keeping. Required by LA. DMV.
- wheels should be the magnesium ones with the oblong holes
- motor data tag does not fit in with the dash data plate time frame. Keeping till it blows up.
- Early M151 had the 25 amp generator with the bread box type voltage regulator. Probably keep as is for now.

Had a PM request asking for some pics of what I've accomplished so far. I know some of it isn't exactly correct for time period such as the vinyl (it's humid in LA!) but it's coming along. Got some sugar cane field dust on her just to make it look more authentic.... Beautiful day for a drive. Biggest things left as you can see are some welding needs to be done, final radio wiring dressed up, and a new horn. As always, thanks to the members for sharing their knowledge. There's a mix of parts from members here such as a Hambone turn signal, an Acudanut fuel pump, a Dauntless vacuum wiper, etc. Hope ya'll like what I've done so far.
