axe handle source

Anyone have a source for new correct axe handles?

I don't think the axe used on the M-151 was anything special. It was basically the same as most others in the hardware store. Same with the shovels. WWII they used proprietary pioneer tools but I think they got away from that due to cost in the later years.

I just haven't found one with the curved handle around here. I have one on the Mutt that is painted and I can tell it was really weathered prior to being painted. Just like to replace with same physical type and leave bare/oiled or varnished finish. I can sand down the shovel handle for the same look. I assume most had the metal parts painted OD but may or may not have painted the wood. Opinion?

Try giving Kevin (Gettysburg63) a shout. He sold me shovel and axe (unpainted) at the Mt. Dora show in February. They look great. They are replicas of the originals...same size, specs, etc. Everything i found up to that point was rotten or damaged.

If my memory serves me correctly, those tools are one of his hobbies...he makes a few of them each year for the shows.

On the 151 I bought, came with the ax/shovel, they were painted black.The guy said it was original paint/color according to the Army, at the time.Maybe that was the kicker to why I bought it!!Now to find them, aw, maybe I won't as they were stolen while parked in a mall parking lot.
