Wooden Sticks and Go Fasts

Unread post by Surveyor » April 29th, 2021, 11:43 pm

Finally got around to getting a new fuel sender. Got one from QTM on ebay. Installed it this afternoon and the inaccurate reading was instantaneous but it's twice more better than being pegged past full all the time. :D

Here is what I have at the moment.

2.5v from wire. I believe it's supposed to be around 2v.
With the tank about half full the gauge reads 1/4. If I pick the float up all the way up inside it goes to reading only 1/2 full.
At about half full I'm getting an ohms reading of about 7 to 8 ohms depending on where I ground. I plan to fill the tank tomorrow but I suspect it will only go to 15 ohms. (need more hands.) I'm guessing it's linear with 0 = 0, 7.5 =1/4, 15 = 1/2, etc. I have two bolts holding the tank down at the moment. To bolt is 7.2 ohms while anything further away that's bare is closer to 8 ohms. Anyone run into similar? Thoughts besides investing in go fasts and a stick? Too old for fasters.

In addition to a pair of "go fasts" and a wooden stick, I suggest a fully charged cell phone  :P

I like sticks. Sticks are our friends.

Sadly, the majority of the reproduction sending units do not have the proper resistance (see the link Ken kindly posted). There is no way to cheat by adding resistors in series with the sending unit (tried it and then it will not read empty). The only way to fix it is to purchase the real deal NOS sending unit. Last one purchased for a friend's mutt came from front line military surplus in PA. :)

You may want to check that the fuel gauge is getting a good ground, sometimes the bracket does not poke through the paint to ground the gauge properly. On our mutt we ran ground wires to each gauge and terminated it to the ground on the gauge cluster.

Thanks for the advice all. I checked the wires to the gauge and have over 24v. I have 3v running through gauge as per manual test so it appears good. Tried another sender I had on hand. This one was a different type from Rapco. This one reads 1/4 full on empty and 3/4 full at full tank. Finding a "real" one appears is going to be my best option or a "walking" stick.

Think of it as an anti-theft option.

The stick shift is too as I don't think many can drive a vehicle with a clutch

Key switch on the battery ground nakes a good anti theft mod
