how did the 151 and 151A1 do brake lights
Morning fellow Muttsters, My brake lights don't work and anyone that has tried to install a new brake light switch on an A2 ( while the assembly is on mutt) knows what I'm talking about when I say it's a pain. how did the A1's have brake lights with no switch on the pedal? I'm thinking of doing that so I have brake lights anybody care to chime in with an opinion, I didn't [pre install it cause I'm a dodo and I could not figure out how it went, and installing the pedal was such a pain I don't want to take it out again cuz it looks so good. thanks.
Dave
ps I know it is a vac switch assembly but where does it go in the brake line system
someone mentioned a flashing red light in the back, is that legal? and how does that go?

Nope. A flashing light is not a legal substitute for brake/tail lights.
You might 'get away with it'....until you don't.
I will also mention that in some states (like Texas) former military vehicles have the privilege of an exemption to mandatory annual inspection.
Abusing that privilege is the best way to ensure a state legislature will consider taking it away.
But, we know you will do the right thing. You've done very good work thus far, with obvious attention to detail (and along the way, provided a learning experience for many of us.) BONUS!
Cheers,
TJ

Re: how did the 151 and 151A1 do brake lights
Yes, I agree, while I live in a tiny town in Tennessee I won't willingly break the law, I'm just thinking there has to be an easier way to do this brake light switch. if the 51 and a1 had brake lights and it didn't involve a switch on the pedal how did they do it and if it works why did they change it? ah the questions of life -It may be a bad switch causing me not to have brake lights and I found one at a good price but the thought of changing it gives me chills, the wiring is pretty simple, I think.
My Dad left me this Mutt then he passed away and I feel it is my duty to him to do it right in his honor but I am afraid I don't have the smarts and it's stressing me out. the brake lights did work b4 I changed out the brake master. so I believe it's something I did or didn't do. I have read the manuals on this site but I still don't have any lights I guess I need help Thanks

Re: how did the 151 and 151A1 do brake lights
Like I said before, the A1 used a pressure switch in the fitting at the rear of the master cylinder. The fitting for the A1 and straight had one spot for the line and another for the brake light switch pressure fitting. You could go this route but you will need to find that special fitting. Or as George said you can put a T anywhere in the brake system but that can be problematic in wiring the switch. The wires are already right there at the brake pedal. The Tee you would need would have to be double flare on the two ends and 1/8" pipe on the T side for the switch. That is going to be a tough one to find.

Re: how did the 151 and 151A1 do brake lights
I gave up on repairing/replacing the mechanical switch on my A2 and simply bought a standard pressure switch at the local auto supply shop. The fitting on the master cylinder is bog standard so there was no issue installing it. Easy-peasy and all works great. So, my recommendation is to do that and all your problems (well this one anyway) will be solved.

If you used the original pedals and brackets why can't you put the original switch back on?

It was broken. Cost of getting a replacement from US versus a local part plus, to my mind, crazy idea of dropping the original hydraulic switch made it a no-brainer.

I was talking to Dave, he had said in another thread that he used the old parts with the new bushings from the set I sent him.

Re: how did the 151 and 151A1 do brake lights
Rick, I put the switch back on I had a hell of a time getting the damn thing put on right with the linkage and all and it doesn't work, impossible to do anything with it installed and I don't want to take those damn pedals out again so I was hoping to go around it and do it the A1 way, my banjo bolt has another threaded opening already it just has a plug in it. it looks like set screw it is brass like a tee and it might be for the A1 my dad had an A1 before this one and he had a lot of parts
. I was wondering if I could just put the vac switch thereYou do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Just remember Dave....things could be worse. A LOT worse. Going under the dash of a Gama Goat is physically impossible....unless you have two elbows on each arm and a friend you owe money to...if only to ensure he is willing to haul you back out by your ankles when the work is done.
