Old trans disposal

Unread post by Cav Trooper » October 12th, 2023, 2:53 pm

What do you guys do with an old transmission? I just replaced mine with a TNJ rebuild. The old one has reverse and 3rd gear issues. I'm thinking scrap metal recycler.
Thoughts?

What is the issue? Reverse and third usually tells me there is an issue with grinding into reverse when trying to go to third. It is seldom worth trashing a transmission unless it is really destroyed, they can be rebuilt.

If you decide it's scrap, cut the input shaft off, makes a good clutch alignment tool.

Don't cut it off! Pull it out whole and then you have a nice handle with the input gear. But let me know what the issue is before cutting or yanking.

Rick, reverse gear grinding when shifting into it when trans is hot and 3rd gear popping out on downshift engine braking. It does not pop out of 3rd on acceration.

The only thing that will cause grinding into reverse would be vehicle movement or clutch not fully disengaging. Third gear is going to be excess end play in the countershaft or mainshaft. That is simply a shim replacement. It would be a shame to scrap a transmission for those issues. Where are you located?

I'm in Cincinnati area. The reverse grind was not solved by adjusting the clutch. The vehicle was not moving. The clutch disk I replaced was the metallic type. I did not see anything that would cause the drag to make the reverse gear grind but, it only acted up when the trans was warm from driving. Cold start it would shift right into reverse no problem. I had a guy from Ok who wanted the top cover complete and I was going to sell it to him for $20 but shipping was $23. He then wanted me to send it so he could inspect it for rail wear. I told him to forget it. It's not worth my time to play games. I understand he wants a good part but I can't guarantee it and not doing a inspect before buy. Other than the 3rd gear and reverse issue it's been a good solid trans. Some one can have it if they want to pick it up or pay shipping.
