Broken Fuel Can Strap - Lost Fuel Can

Unread post by glcaines » October 21st, 2023, 9:38 pm

I recently attended the Southeastern Military Vehicle Rally at Windrock Park in Tennessee. I took my M35A3 pulling an XM1061E1 trailer with my M151A2. I took the 1/4 ton on several trails at the Rally. On one of the rougher trails, the strap holding my fuel can broke and the fuel can fell off. At the time, I had no idea what had happened until I saw the broken strap and missing fuel can later. Fortunately, another off-roader found the can and turned it in so I did get it back. It was only scratched and was still full of gas. Although the strap was decades old, the canvas strap appeared to be in excellent condition. Obviously, it was not in excellent condition. I'm posting this because there are undoubtedly others with full fuel cans secured with older straps that may look good, but are not. I now have an NOS canvas strap installed.

Same thing happened to my gas can strap, except I found the rotted strap while inspecting the jeep, have a bungie rubber cord holding the gas can on now.Have to buy one somewhere .Maybe make one out of a rope?( splice a couple of eyes in the rope.

I found an NOS one for $28.95 and $10.40 shipping on Ebay. It was expensive, but in perfect condition and obviously NOS. It looks very good. The ad I bought from has one left.
