Back from MUTT recon
I went and looked at two MUTTs today. My friend refered to them as "starter kits". One (truck #2 with the bent passenger rear fender) has two vents under the windshield, the other MAY have had two but somebody tried to repair some rust under that and now it is not possible to tell what was there. Here's a couple of pics, the rest are at the link at the end of this post:
NOTE: These trucks are $500 each, unless I can get them for a deal together.
Truck #1
(This one seemed to have less rot underneath, LESS being relative.)

Re: Back from MUTT recon
LOL My first thought was that the double ball hitch was for dragin 2 deer at a time!
Sorry,
Rainman
Upon closer review, both seem to be early M151's #1 with many mods like steering wheel and A2 style e-brake with early accordion boot. Both have steel rims so my guess is 1963 or 1964's.

Re: Back from MUTT recon
The burning question is: Is one or both of these candidates for restoration? The first one was recomended to me by my buddy and our local chapter president. I'll be getting a separate, running engine and second transmission if I buy one of these.
Notice that the frame was cut forward of the grill on the first truck, so there's no where to put a bumper. I'll have to fab that up.
For $500....is it a good deal for an early truck?

Re: Back from MUTT recon
I think most here will agree that if your looking for your first mutt its best to buy one that is running and doesn't need a ton of parts and work to restore it. I think all these vehicles are worth restoring but money is always the determining factor. I bought an A-2 as my first vehicle and it is in really great shape. I'm in the middle of restoring it now and getting near completion. I also bought two A-1's last year and they will need extensive work to get them back on the road. I see alot of people taking on big projects and spending alot of $$ on restoring one and half way through find a better vehicle, get bored, or something in life pops up and they need money so they sell it off at a big loss.
$500 for an early 151 would be a good deal as long as the main frame parts undrneath aren't rotted in half and most all the hard to find parts particular to the 151 are there. Are you planning on restoring to original or modifying it. Original 151 parts are getting harder to find.

Re: Back from MUTT recon
I'm a original restoration guy so whatever jeep I get will go back to stock. I'm tempted by the green one, jeep #1, since it didn't look too bad underneath.
I'm not making a decision now, he's in no hurry to sell. I'm going to see what there is to find at Aberdeen.

Re: Back from MUTT recon
The orange one is a very early 151 with the dual vents. I will be cruising Aberdeen in my A1. Look me up. There will be several guys there with 151's, they all know me so I will not be hard to find.
