They're like Lay's Potato Chips....

And since I've kinda fast-forwarded past Pima Air Museum let's just back up for a moment for s a tiny taste of what they have to offer..

I found this method of controlling how important plumbing is sometimes handled very interesting.

I saw one of these in action while I was in Afghanistan. These make a very hateful noise when they're in the air. They flew one right up to a building (from which attacks against the U.S,Embassy were being launched) and, Hollywood style, just unloaded on the target. That was followed up by a Blackhawk having it's turn. Afghans don't worry about what is behind the target. Anyhoo, our troubles were over after that.

A few close ups allowing you to see some of the working bits from an angle not often attainable.

Will you look at all that lovely metal forming!

Okie dokie, back to hanging out in Cool Car Central.

Our next stop was located in another, smaller herd of industrial buildings. Van Dyne Engineering does engines. Lots and lots and LOTS of engines....from the exotic to the not so exotic. But this is not the place to bring your old Ford Country Squire for a refit. These are for Big Boy Toys.

When they're not building things that go VROOM (and dyno-ing them), they're building midget racers and they had a brace of them in the shop when we stopped by.

In other news, they're being sued by some moron who managed to get on the roof of their shop and fall not less than 18 feet (my estimation) and who was found there in the morning, all busted up. Apparently California law requires skylights be built with sufficient strength to support a barn dance. After fixing said skylight and installing a set of security bars, their landlord told them to remove the bars. One simply cannot make this sort of stuff up. But...

California.

Meh!

I'm still shaking my head about that one. Anyhoo, I wish them luck. Frank's eyes lit up because Dyno-ing engines was a big part of his former life, and again, we moved about amongst all the internal combustion engines; me and my mop and bucket, cleaning up all the drool.

This visit also became my very first 'up close and personal' moment with the famed Offenhauser engine. Frank explained them to me. The whole Offenhauser thing is pure, absolute genius. No wonder they were a favorite.

The engines you see in the photos are just a small part of what they have there. They have a rack meant specifically to hold engine cranks. I stopped counting at thirty seven cranks and you can bet every one of those will find a new life in another engine. It's the circle of life....in metal.

We visited Jimmy Shine, which is to say we visited Jimmy Shine's Speedshop. Now the thing about Jimmy Shine is, he's what I call a 'Forever Hot Rodder'. He got into it young (along with a whole lot of other people) and stuck it out and made a successful living at it. Orange California is a great place to be doing this stuff. What he does is EVERYthing. He's involved in or has formerly been involved in nearly every facet of go-fast stuff for almost his whole life. A lot of other folks couldn't make it in the industry. He's still doing the thing. VERY cool.

And, he's also a diligent note-taker and always has been. What is in his personal rear view mirror is chronicled and reference-able. What is on his personal horizon is coming at him at 200 MPH and he loves it. He showed us a three ring binder of notes he had taken in his early years. Way back when, when business cards were a thing, he would line off a section of his notes and meticulously reproduce whatever business cars had been presented to him. His office is awash with all sorts of memorabilia and trophies (of a sort) consisting of failed engine parts and all sorts. Everything has a story.

Visiting with him was a fun.

A Ferrari engine with a cheap Fram wannabe filter on it???!!!!!! Wow.
And did you think I would miss the intake system on the Pontiac. I see the DARE LS heads on it but I cannot make out the name on the intake. Interesting setup though.

Oh I know, But I assure you that I would run that engine on the stand with nothing but Wix filters and I would also state in the paperwork that there are no guarantees if a Fram filter is used. Then they can do whatever they want.
