Okie dokie, back to hanging out in Cool Car Central.
Our next stop was located in another, smaller herd of industrial buildings. Van Dyne Engineering does engines. Lots and lots and
LOTS of engines....from the exotic to the not so exotic. But this is not the place to bring your old Ford Country Squire for a refit. These are for Big Boy Toys.
When they're not building things that go VROOM (and dyno-ing them), they're building midget racers and they had a brace of them in the shop when we stopped by.
In other news, they're being sued by some moron who managed to get on the roof of their shop and fall not less than 18 feet (my estimation) and who was found there in the morning, all busted up. Apparently California law requires skylights be built with sufficient strength to support a barn dance. After fixing said skylight and installing a set of security bars, their landlord told them to remove the bars. One simply cannot make this sort of stuff up. But...
California.
Meh!
I'm still shaking my head about that one. Anyhoo, I wish them luck. Frank's eyes lit up because Dyno-ing engines was a big part of his former life, and again, we moved about amongst all the internal combustion engines; me and my mop and bucket, cleaning up all the drool.

This visit also became my very first 'up close and personal' moment with the famed Offenhauser engine. Frank explained them to me. The whole Offenhauser thing is pure, absolute genius. No wonder they were a favorite.
The engines you see in the photos are just a small part of what they have there. They have a rack meant specifically to hold engine cranks. I stopped counting at thirty seven cranks and you can bet every one of those will find a new life in another engine. It's the circle of life....in metal.
