Curtain Fasteners

Unread post by Francis Marion » August 24th, 2009, 9:12 am

I don't know what they are officially called but I would like to purchase a bunch of the fasteners used on the tops, doors, and seat pockets. I'm pretty good with a sewing machine and would like to fabricate my own canvas top, doors, side walls, and seats. The canvas is easy to get but I don't know where to get the fasteners. Does anyone here know where I can get some?

At the shows I see weebee webbing Dave selling the twist fasteners. What comes to mind are the screw to the grill type, but I'm sure he has the metal tab to canvas secured ones also. He is listed here on the "resource? page, or I can get you a link and phone number if you need it.

Thank you very much! I updated the topic to match their name for the pieces.

Now I need to find out how many of these I need. I have found enough photos from my personal collection and online to identify how many are on each piece except the doors. Can someone, with doors on hand, tell me how many of each, grommets and studs?

Thanks! I became intimately familiar with the top, I actually made a little bikini top from some lighter weight canvas when I was home.

So far, the hardware totals I have:

Top, 21 studs, 13 grommets, 4 buckles
sides, 18 studs, 28 grommets, 8 buckles
doors, 43 studs, 43 grommets, 2 buckles
seats, 8 studs, 8 grommets

At $2.50 each, the studs seem a little pricey. The grommets are a little better at $.80. Beachwood Canvas wants $35 a yard for suitable weight canvas. I'm still looking for better prices for studs and canvas but can reproduce a full set of canvas for around $800 (not including labor) which is a savings of $400 over the lowest prices I have seen online for a complete set.

Don't forget to add in the price of the windows.

I know. I also didn't include the webbing, webbing tips, and snaps in this list. My personal list is much more detailed. (and getting longer by the day) I have created a spreadsheet detailing everything I need for my MUTT. The first sheet list required items, the second show what I have on hand, and the third tracks the work I have done. The first is MUCH longer than the other two right now and the second is missing a bunch of parts that came with the vehicle and haven't been inventoried yet. (file attached below)

I also found a much more reasonable price for the "Common Sense" fasteners that knocked a couple hundred dollars off the price of my materials. :D Still waiting for word back on another source for canvas. If I can cut my current price for canvas in half, I could undercut the market and still make some money.
