Oil Filters

I am curious about what everybody is using for oil filters on their Mutts.

Are you going to the trouble of getting milstock components or making do with civilian units?

The last one I got was a FRAM which I spray painted green to look the part.

What does the rest of the group do?

Fram PH8A painted either O.D. or Black, whichever rattle can is handy when I buy it.

I use a WIX oil filter p/n 51515. No need to paint they are already black and a hell of a lot better than FRAM. I was a FRAM user until I found out about WIX from a local O'Reilly's auto parts store. Compare them side by side and WIX is far better constructed filter. My opinion, of course.

Better yet, Cut open a Fram and compare it with any other! I used to use Fram exclusivily until I saw the difference inside. Now I use Wix.

Yup, me too. WIX all the way. Just make sure you peel the NASCAR sticker off before you install it... unless you're into that sort of thing

Ok, sounds like WIX is the filter to use. Now for the 64 dollar question, what is the best oil to use? I have heard several different suggestions from some local folks, now would like to get the suggestions from every one here.

Ok, back to playing in snow drifts with the trusty old mutt.

Shell Rotella T 15w40 is Shell's highest detergent motor oil. It is kind of the gold standard as far as heavy duty motor oils go. I use it. If your M151 is stored outside in cold weather, it is also made in a 10w30.

I use brand name 30 weight but I might switch to the Rotella since I buy it in five gallon cans for my truck.

I use Castrol GTX in all my vehicles. I haven't finished the A-2 yet so not sure which grade I'll go with but I know the brand.
