block casting marking

Unread post by Horst » January 2nd, 2010, 10:01 am

While cleaning my engine block, I wondered what that casting marking (above the casting date) stands for. I would guess it is the foundry. Anybody knows?

I would guess that the symbol on top is the foundry name, the next one is probably the date the mold was made, July 19 1972. The last one would be the casting number. That might be a sequential number or a fixed number for all blocks from that foundry.

That does not look like the same rusty block from before, did you get it cleaned?

Yes, was thinking that too. Would be interested if somebody would know the foundry name. Not really important, just out of curiosity.

Sure, same block. Just a little later. But that picture shows one of the cleaner areas.

Another good bit of information to know. You can at least date the block to the vehicle if your data plate is missing. Rick, when the military rebuilt these motors did they rebore and reuse the blocks? This is the data plate on my m37. Did they do the same for the 151's?
