Leak dilemma

Unread post by sarmadq » February 15th, 2010, 2:04 am

Guys, I have a problem. I changed the tranny output shaft seal but I am still leaking oil. What I have narrowed it down to is what I want to know.

In the picture below, does to shaft retainer and the tranny have a packing seal in between them :?: I have marked it in a red circle. The guy who put in said there was none between them and thus he didnt put in a new one either, but says that the two metals should have one to stop liquid flowing out.

Sam, there should be a seal there. See image 7-16 TM 9-2320-218-34-1 item 11, output shaft retainer gasket. When I replaced my seal the gasket was in good form so I just made sure both metal surfaces were clean, cleaned the gasket and reused it with permitex gasket sealant. You could easily fabricate one from gasket material.

Agreed, You can use any of the modern gasket sealer/makers. I use Permatex black RTV.

If you use the RTV you will not need any gasket material. Just make sure it is clean and dry when you put the sealer on.

Clean is ok, dry would mean really draining the last drop out, right :!:

Yes it would have to be dry but you could jack up the rear and that would stop any more fluid from coming out and then you could dry it with a solvent of your choice. Or you could do what Sherwan is suggesting, I am not familiar with what he is talking about but it sounds like a wrapping paper maybe?

Well I'm trying to figure out what 'jaen' is too..... I guess the market people would know. I can let it drain overnight, but then I'm concerned of contamination from the air etc.

"Jaen" is the local term used for sealing paper, usually made up of fiber, i am not sure of the contents because its got Chinese written all over it and I'm not brilliant.. . Not sure of the words origins too, but up north east, if we ever need to seal something which is bolted on we just tell the other fellow "Go get the damn jaen paper you idiot"
Heck i've seen some folks use it as a gasket for their bike...
