Motor Rebuild
As some of you know, I pulled and disassembled the motor from "Betty Mutt" about 4 years ago After moving to Florida and working on the body for a year I decided to work on the motor again, I took it to a local Machine Shop and had it cleaned, bored .020 over, new pistons fitted and all moving parts balanced, I picked it up about 2 weeks ago, sinch then I have been recleaning all the parts and getting ready to reassamble it.
Today I started the reassambley
lifters in
Camshaft and Crankshaft installed
Timing marks alined
Main bearing caps torqued
Rear main oil seal installed

Re: Motor Rebuild
After dinner and "a beer" I put the pistons back on the rods, all the bearings and mateing surfaces were coated with Lucas Assembly Lube
I'll give the cam lobes a good coat befor the pan is put on.
Pistons and rods ready to put together.
Piston pin with lub.
putting the pin retainers on.
ready to go in the block, "almost"
it seems that over the 4 years this motor has been apart I have "mis placed" a set of the piston pin retainers if anyone has a set I need 2.

Re: Motor Rebuild
Thanks! I have sent out some e-mails to parts suppliers that have them listed but don't show a price, so far, Blake Callaway of Red River Parts & Equipment has had every part I needed except 1, they are very nice people to deal with and I got everything i ordered in 3 days.
I have an open motor at work that I can pop a piston out of if I must. I'll keep the photos coming as the work progresses.

Re: Motor Rebuild
Hi, I was able to "liberate" 2 lock rings from the motor at work, sure is nice to have a scrap pile to pick throught. Yesterday I put the last piston pin in place and started on putting them back in the block,
first I had to put the expansion plugs in the rear of the block.
then I put the block on the engine stand.
put the other 2 expansion plugs in.
pistons ready to go.
a dip in a 50/50 mix of motor oil and assembly oil.
swab the cylinder with the same oil mix.
install pistons with the bearing in the rod. #2 and #3
install and torque rod caps.
rotate crankshaft and install #1 and #4
torque #1 and #4 then recheck all.
My nephew came over to tell me that dinner was ready and took the last 4 photos to hurry me up.

Re: Motor Rebuild
After dinner i closed up the bottom end and put the front cover on.
installing the oil pump.
when installing the pump be sure that the "small notch" in the end of the shaft is pointing to the front of the motor "after" it has been mated with the cam gear.
install the pickup tube and strainer.
replace front cover seal.
install the crankshaft oil slinger
install front cover.
install oil pan and gasket/seals.
install crankshaft pully, ready for the head.

Re: Motor Rebuild
Looks great Dan, what did you use to soak the block in (green stuff?) How much is reasonable to have an engine balanced?

Re: Motor Rebuild
The cleaner in the tub is a biodegradable machinery cleaner that you dilute with water, I picked it up at Harbor Freight.
The machine shop charged $150.00 to balance the engine. The total to bore and hone the cyl's to .020 over, remove and replace the cam bearings, polish the crank, check and clean out all oil holes, hot tank the block and the balance job was $365.00
Thanks!
