What spares do you carry?

Postby Jetnoise400 » July 8th, 2010, 2:45 pm

Hi All,

It's been a while, but I'm still kicking around. I'm considering doing more than shows and parades with my A2 and was wondering what spare parts would you recommend be carried when on a trail ride or convoy type activity.

Thanks!

Hello,

I'm in the process of building up my spare parts box to carry in my A2.

Mine will consist of:
Carb and Fuel Filter,
Fuel Pump,
Distributor (try and have the same guts in both, ie Swiss or Prestolite, as ive found that the Rotor orientation is slightly different between the two kits; enough that you can't just drop it in exactly the same spot and have the timing be ok),
Ignition Switch.

These items will more or less ensure it will get fuel and spark.

If I planned on taking it far away from home, I'd probably take the spare Starter and Generator I keep in the garage.

I'm not too too worried about the driveline components due to everything being interchangeable between the front and rear (Diff and Axle Shafts).

For the most part I carry the normal jack, pliers, and screwdriver, but it's hard to beat a cell phone and an auto club card that's good for a 100 mile tow. I do carry a compass, first aid kit, space blanket, a bottle of water and an MRE. If I felt the need to actually carry a spare alternator, carb and distributor, it might ruin my sense of adventure. Lots of spares may be a good idea on a coast to coast convoy, but for an evening drive in the national park, I'm going with a roll of hundred mile an hour tape and the AAA. :D

I think I should have been a bit more clear, as I agree with you Rainman a bit here.

If i'm within a normal distance from home, all I carry is the Tire Changing Gear/Tool Bag and a Flat Tip Screw Driver small enough for the Zenith Idle Adjustment Screw.... Thats it.

The Carb, Pump, Distributor etc etc, would be for a trip well over 100 miles from home. The Generator and Starter would be if I was taking it half way across the country or something, as M151's and spare parts weren't/aren't exactly common up here :)

After having an Ignition Coil go belly up on me a little over 100 miles away from home last year, I wouldn't risk it again, and it all fits in an Ammo Can. My wife doesn't like sitting next to Tow Truck Drivers :D

Hey Floyd,

Yes, I did move. I got laid off last September, and then my Wife got a job offer in Reno for a dream come true job, so we packed it all up and moved east to the land of the free. :)

Mandatory MV content: Nice thing about moving is that our house has a 900 sq ft shop in the backyard and all of my green machines fit inside with room to work. Better than my 2 car garage I was in before!
