Registration Woes and Other Issues

Unread post by TrustyMUTT » February 2nd, 2011, 10:58 am

Hello everyone, I'm back after an extended time away!

First, thanks for all the help in my previous post: http://g838.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2123&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I am picking up where I left off nearly a year ago and the major items to tackle are:
1 - get the thing titled and registered (more below)
2 - fix exhaust leak where manifold meets down pipe - suggestions VERY welcome here!
3 - replace seals on front differential

Concerning the title and registration, I have a blank data plate for a M151A1 (which is what I believe I have) but only have an "example" data plate for an earlier M151. Based on the pictures that I posted in my other post, can anyone tell me what information I should put in the blanks on my data plate? I have a contract number from the engine that should work for that spot on the data plate but still need a "MFD. BY", VEH IDENT NO.", "DATE OF DELIVERY", and "INSPECTION". Any help on this will be greatly appreciated!

I have a friend in AL that can have the vehicle registered without a title and then with this registration I will be able to title and subsequently register the MUTT in my home state of TN.

Again, thanks for all the help and the help to come!

check your firewall for a "Budd" plate. if its there, record the number and reach out to Ken, the Muttguru here. With that number, he can tell you the manufacturer, an approx date of delivery and reg. number, the correct contract number etc. The inspection block was stamped with an eagle over some stars....known as an acceptance stamp.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I know that my previous post is quite long, hence the reason I started this one. In that post, I mentioned that all markings, data plates, etc. have been removed; that is, other than the engine data plate that has the Contract No. Da-20-113-AMC-02787(T) on it. I know that matching numbers were not around back then but I'd like to use that information in reconstructing the data plate. Any other ideas?

A "reference" data plate for an M151A1 like the one for a M151 posted in my old thread will give me the formats necessary for me to fill in the new one.

Thanks again!

there were a few contracts so you need to at least guess at a year for your mutt. You might find a date on the data plate attached to the horn.
The engine numbers are no help other than the jeep is probably no older (but may be newer) than the engine if original.

Trusty, don't know about TN but in VA I reg and titled a Mutt I imported and it was not so bad. They wanted an ID # which I gave to them, then a officer of the state came to my home to varify the ID I gave was actually on the vehicle and he handed me the title on the spot. All up it took about 4 weeks. Each state is different but it can be done and they should be able to tell you at your DMV the proceedure and info required.

Remember ,when registering a mutt ,I always get a receipt that says demilled right on it ,secondly under type of vehicle, never put jeep, it is a light truck. For manufacturer ,I put down AMG or Ford and never had trouble in New York

I know that Calif assigned a vin to the A2 I have. The Marine I bought it from did all the restore work and got it titled that way.

Thanks for the guidance everyone!

A couple of questions for guidance though:
What is the importance of having it titled as a light truck as opposed to a Ford Jeep? Does this have to do with resale value, because there is no intention of ever selling this thing.
For the Ford built A1's, what was stamped in the MFD. BY field on the dash data plate, "FORD MOTOR COMPANY"?

Thanks again!

If you put demilled they are going to look into it and find that the demill order meant not to be used on the street. Even if they don't go that far you will probably get a salvage title and getting that street legal is another nightmare. In NJ if it is not on their list of vehicles you are going to be SOL. I had an original title from NJ from the previous owner that stated it was a M-151. The new title that was transferred to me lists it as a Ford wagon. By the way, mine is not demilled, why would I want to say it is? If you say it is and they inspect it and find it is not then that is fraud!

I found out and this is my personal experience, when titleing a "jeep" ,that jeep is a brand name....would you register it as a "jeep" Jeep. There are exceptions to every rule, so do what works for you. Also every Motor Vehicle office is different too, some are cooperative and some dig in their heels, all these guys are giving you good advice. Go in with your mouth shut and your ears open and they will tell you what you need. They love it when you pound your fist on the counter and remind them you pay their salaries...lol
