IntercomVIC1

Do any of you have a VIC1 intercom system installed in their M151? I am curious where the various boxes would be mounted. Also, would this have been done in real military application of a Mutt? If so how far back, even in the mid to late 60's?

I have picked up most of the components, seemed like a nice way to be able to talk to each other when whipping down the road with the top off. Plus you can play music over the system. But when I started to sort out how to do it, I became worried about if it was actually ever done by the military.

Have been thinking the same thing for years but never got very far. How much of a VIC 1system do you need for a two position system? It sure would be great to have especially for someone who is going a little deaf.

A complete VIC 1 is a little expensive. Riv Rad had one available but it was up there in cost . Individual pieces were available on the 838 butI didn't dare to buy it. Some years ago a system installed in a deuce was shown in Military Vehicles. Am going to try and find the article and figure what is necessary
Stay tuned for results.

The power cable I have that runs from the Radio mount to the AM1780 is short, so it will probably have to go under the radio mount on the sponson, on the fender wall. Then mount one intercom station box on the dash above the grab handle. Maybe the other on the deck in front of my gun mount? I wonder if I could mount them back to back on the gun mount. That might be in the way of the two occupants though. Would sure hurt to get poked in the hip with a comm box!

Bottom line, I will just have to lay everything out and see what fits. I promise to get pictures as I install. If anybody has any pics of a VIC1 installed, please share them!

There was a good article and wiring diagram for a VIC 1 in the December 2004 Military vehicles. It gives you a lot of info on what exactly is needed.
It appears that you need the amplifier box and at least two control boxes for a two unit system plus a lot of cables.
I also read an article on Google written by some one using it a Pinzguer. Allheplful stuff
If I go ahead wit this project it looks like it won't be cheap.

A motorcycle intercom would be cheaper and easier if you are just looking for function.

The gear is a bit pricey. The good thing about the VIV1 is you do not need a working radio to run it. You do need the radio mount. I got some of my parts on ebay. If you search real good, there are usually a lot of parts out there. The total packages seem to cost a bit more than putting one together peacemeal.

I thought about the motorcycle type intercom, but wanted to hold true to the theme and go with military hardware.

If you are starting from scratch you will need:
MT-1029 radio mount
AM-1780 control box
C-2298 control boxes - users junction box for headset or helmet (x however many you need)
CX-4723 connecting cables - one for each user station box
CX-7060 power cable from mount to AM-1780

Holy crap Ralph,
I've got some of that stuff available! Seems you just got your hands on some of it recently yourself. I might have to make some of mine available on the "for sale" section. :D Hey OMGM, it's local w/ no delivery fees!

When you see that picture it is sure a lot of crap just to talk between two people!
I would like to drop it down to one box with an amplifier and two headsets. It won't be GI but will serve the purpose.
Any thoughts?

Fil,

I totally agree. It adds a hell of alot of extra Cabling and Boxes for 2 people sitting 2' apart. The 1780 itself takes up alot of room. I never saw this kit in anything but M113's and larger, or the odd CP to talk from the Cab to the CP Box. I had a complete kit (1780, 2 x 2298, 2 x CVC Helmet) that I gave away last year after contemplating the whole thing. I tried selling them on the Forums up here, but there was really no interest for them.

For me, being able to have access to the radio via a headset when convoys are underway is great, and safer than using the handset. Being able to ride in an open jeep at road speeds, talk with your passenger (not yell) and still have a voice left at the end of the journey is great.

To each his own, that is the great thing about it all.

Don't get me wrong , I would still do an intercom system if I can come up with a simple amplifier circuit that will cross connect the two headsets. I still would like to use GI headsets and connectors just not all that extra hardware.
Any thoughts or an amplifier?
