OK looks like I (now) need a GI-ish Shovel... . My local Ace has the ones with the wood & metal "D" handles which would be suitable for the mutt, but I think may be too long for what I need. The shovel is for my ferret and it can't be any longer then 36" (maybe 37" will work) as it has to fit in a certain spot on the glasis plate.
I know the traditional shovel carried on the ferret (or most Brit MVs, for that matter) had a "T" handle and not the "D" handle. I haven't had much luck sourcing one of the Brit shovels from any of my dealers across the pond so I'm going with "substitute standard" .

good luck on that, The two I got were not NOS even though seller said they were, had red painted metal handle and spade, plain wood shaft and handle. They were US made though so I can use.
i would do what others suggested, get one from the local hardware store and modify.

I can always cut down one of those Ames shovels that ACE hardware sells so it will fit if need be, but if I can get the "correct" one then I'd perfer that. Notice "correct" doesn't have to be US GI as the vehicle it's going on is/was never a US MV. Thought the US GI shovels might be the appropriate length right from jump street and need only paint.
Ralph
thanks for posting that link. The majority of those shovels on ebay appear to be the US military "boonie spoons" that were issue before we went to a folding type shovel late in WWII. Those are too small for my needs.
Here's a link to a picture page of ferrets showing the type of shovel that was carried.

Top,
I just found a NOS shovel. The metal part of the handle was also painted red, the rest was unpainted. It was a True Temper, I believe. It also had a large sticker on it with the NSN number.

Re: where to find correct Army shovels for the 151?
I have a few for all the vehicles. One of them I got out of a 5 ton accessory kit, a wooden box with the air hose, tools, pioneer kit, etc. The shovel handle is like Scott's. Red "t" handle. Laqured wood and black spade.
I also have a shovel out of a HMMUV and it is black with "UNION" in green. Both shovels have the NSN stamped in the wood. Both have a paper tag with the NSN printed on them.
BTW, both axe's have natural wood (laqured) but a light WWII looking green axe. The mattox has a black head and natural wood handle.
