Ran across this on a Cavalry Spur page I follow, and was a little shocked to read the first hand details of this often shown and discussed photograph. What's written isn't so shocking, just that it's firsthand. Could this be for real, a long unknown description with a unit connection? I look forward to your comments...
Ron Hoeltge "I'm standing on far right, cut off by the edge of the photo. You can barely make out the horse blanket on the sleeve of my driver (and still best friend) sitting on the hood; the two guys down in lower right were my gunner & asst. gunner of the squad. MACV Team 21 compound, Pleiku, RVN 1972"

Re: Favorite Photo Details
Rainman, I am pretty sure the MAC 21 team was a Signal Brigade Team. I remember they had an extensive aerial signal and camera operation there. I do not remember any SOG's there. You might want to look through your Sparky connections and see if you can find them there. That is pretty close to your years in, you may know some of them? I don't think those guys in the picture were part of MACV 21. May have been but there are a lot of launchers for a signal unit.

Re: Favorite Photo Details
i don't know that those vehicles were part of team 21. the driver has a cavalry patch on his sleeve. Wouldn't he have had the mac-v patch if he was part of team 21? The way the text was worded would indicate to me just that his location in the picture was team 21 compound in Pleiku, in 1972. SSGT Hoeltge had service in CONUS, SE Asia, Western Europe, other regions. MOS: 11B3P, 54E30. Served with 82nd Abn Div; 1st Cavalry Div, 4th Inf Div, 8th Inf Div, 1st COSCOM, 19th Special Forces (CO ANG) He retired in 1984 after being injured. He had 13 years of service.
