Differential Modification Project
I am gearing up to try a differential mod/replacement, at this point I am just gathering parts to start the project. Today I picked up 2, 04-08 Mazda RX 8 rears, they are takeouts that have appx 50 miles on them from new cars delivered to a racing school in Sebring Fl. I will post all info when I start on this.

And what will you do for the front? It will be turning reversed.

Re: Differential Modification Project
Don't know the gear setup at this time, this is to be determined but, I am sure there are many combination's available, I was told they are locking diff, this also will be determined when I start the project.rickf wrote:What gears are in them? Are they limited slip?

Re: Differential Modification Project
This will also be determined when I start, I may be wrong but, I think a old ford Bronco/Ranger 4x4 had a reverse turning gear set.rickf wrote:And what will you do for the front? It will be turning reversed.

Re: Differential Modification Project
Vehicles with a transfer case reverse the direction of the front drive shaft. A m151 turns the same direction straight through. The m151 diff is fed from either end so you can use the same rotation, the diff is always looking the same way. Early Fords had a high pinion diff which was called a reversed gear but in fact it was not.

Re: Differential Modification Project
Good day Dan,
The RX-8 diffs are a good choice.
Are these out of a Automatic or a Manual car?
I'm keen to see how you do it and how it goes.
Regards

Hello sherwan, I don't know at this point, I was just looking for a nice compact diff housing to try and adapt under my 151 and didn't even ask I got them for less then $100.00 for the pair so not much will be lost if it don't work out, I'll call the guy I got them from and see if the school told him.

Re: Differential Modification Project
You are going to have to source a couple sets of axles and pinions for them also. And probably cut off drive shafts to adapt to for power input.

Re: Differential Modification Project
Ya, I am thinking the axle shafts for sure and, as I like to make this stuff a quick change back to stock I'll most likely use one of my xtra drive shafts for the mod work.rickf wrote:You are going to have to source a couple sets of axles and pinions for them also. Re: Differential Modification Project
hi
wen i look for the gear ratio the mutt has 4.86 : 1
the RX 8 Mazda has manual 4.44:1
bud there are also diffs with
3.9:1
4.10: 1
4.30 :1
4.77 :1
5.125 :1
with the 4.44: 1 it will be faster bud less power
the gear 4.77:1 will be the best
success george
