Odd trailer coming up for sale, no clue what it is

Unread post by 04mustang » January 9th, 2016, 8:10 am

I was on gov planet this morning and noticed a trailer close to me that had M151 wheels on it. It is very small and painted yellow, but has green paint under it. It appears that someone has removed the lunette and added an extension and a 2" ball hitch. No data plate.

Any ideas on what it is?

I can see that. But it looks like a specially built trailer. Not really one that started out as a flatbed and then converted.
It almost looks like a munitions trailer. and given it is a camp Lejeune, NC. I wouldn't doubt it.

Those thin straps are for permanently bolting something down, Most likely a water tank or gas tank. Not munitions which would use a much stronger and also quick release mechanism. That is going to be something that was someones personal property that was left behind when they moved and is being sold off along with everything else.

I think it was setup to carry a Herman Nelson Heater. :)

I would have to disagree Dan, The diameter of that heater is a lot bigger than the saddle on that trailer, plus you can see that the saddles and the strap holders were just welded to the trailer at the same time as the hitch.

So I was wrong--the rear part of flat bed was too short to be a m416? Do you guys have a zoom feature on your computer so you can look closer?

It looks to me like a standard M416 trailer with the body removed and the rear end shortened. There's also signs of the tab which is used to bolt the fenders on. The equipment mount has been custom-made. Somwhere I have a picture of an M151A1 in the identical color at a disposal site near a naval station (Norfolk??)

Well I ended up buying it. It went through the gov planet sale and didn't sell for their starting bid of $125. I called them up and offered $50, they countered at $100 and we met in the middle at $75.
Now I've got to make a trip to the coast to get the darn thing, lol.
My wife is going to kill me. The last trailers I bought, 2 M1101 trailers took months to sell. I sold one of them within a couple of weeks of bringing them home. The other one didn't sell for 9 months.

I haven't decided what to do with this one yet. If its in good shape I may keep it and use it on the farm. If not I may do a little work to it and sell it.
It seems there is quite a large following of these smaller military trailers in the civilian side that like to cut them up and convert them to camping trailers. Well here is one that is already cut up, I think.

It's interesting to hear you could bargain with them like that. I have not bought a single thing from them since I registered when they first started selling government vehicles due to their outrageous minimum bids. Government liquidation has done the same thing. They wanted 1200.00 for a 30 year old gen-set with missing parts!!! I bid 200.00 and was going NO higher. In this case they actually got it though. It was a war between two new bidders that I had never seen and they got bidders disease and just kept going. They had no idea that it was missing two fuel pumps, starter and had cut wiring. It was a parts unit. The reserve went off at 1200.00 and they stopped at 1330.00. All I can say is somebody is going to be real disappointed when they find out there is NO guarantee!      Post pictures when you get it, I still think it is a 762.

Thanks!
I am supposed to be going to get it on Thursday, but we shall see.

I have bought several items from gov planet now. 4 trailers, and 1 hmmwv.
I did recently buy a lot of storage cases from GL and I have to say that it is night and day in dealing with the 2 companies. GP is so much easier to deal with on the post sale side of things. and its nice to have the sale all in one day each week, instead of random days each week.
I really didn't like that GL made me wait for 4 days before they gave me and invoice and the load out paperwork. GP will do that the same day if you call and pay. its very streamlined.

4 days and you are complaining!? You never had to get a EUC did you? I had to wait 2 months and that was one of the short waits. My subsequent EUC buys were shorter but never under tree weeks.

No, no, no, I'm not complaining by any means.
I have had to wait for 4 months on my first EUC last year but the others after that were less than 1 month.
There wasn't a EUC on this trailer, mainly because there wasn't even a serial tag found. It has one of the RH side of the frame in front of the wheel, but its painted over.

I brought the trailer home yesterday.
According to the people that released it. It was being used by the wildlife person on base for a pesticide tank trailer.
It has been cut down on the back end.
