1964 M151 Kaiser

OK, just could not help myself...... With the help of a friend, I found another MUTT..... this should be a 1964 M151, and a somewhat unusual M151 A1 front clip (with an A2 front fender welded to it).

Read through the thread. I've sorted out most of the systems and have this titled and ready for sale. I'll be improving it more over time. Price is negotiable, depending on how much I end up putting in to it as time goes by.

So, How do you get a MUTT and a half from the north east (MA) to Florida...... You stack them! Should arrive here this week... Thanks, Brian....

Well, that should be an easy restoration, it's already sabre blue. You're halfway there.

Actually, I'm doubtful it is blue. That may just be the lighting on the photo. It has USA on the hood and a hood number starting in 2N, so I think it is an Army vehicle. I'll see once I get it...... and figure out how to lift the front clip off the back.

Looking at the bottom sides I would guess that led a rough life of wheeling over rocks. I am guessing the underneath is going to be real rough.

Got the front clip off. It's not really in bad shape. The rear panel is toast, but those are available. Frames are in reasonable shape.

More to come. Dealing with the front clip we took off the back of it yesterday, before I do anymore to this one.

The caddy is not mine. I have 3 complete and two front clip only quarter tons there.

That being said, once you get one of these that are pulled out of someones back field, you just don't know what you're going to get. This one came from MA. So, yesterday, I pulled the front clip off the back, and today I pressure washed off the pine needles and years of dirt..... even some layers of paint.

Like I said, you never know what you're going to get..... To my delight, I do indeed have a very rare M151. This is the one with the data plate mounted over the dimmer light switch.

Looking further, another rarity..... It is that hard to find one with the dashboard modified for a civilian radio and stereo speakers on both side..... Jealous, aren't you!!!!?!

If that is not enough.... That pesky wiring harness has been simplified with a bus strip on the firewall, colored wiring, and that rarely seen ignition key.

And, as commonly found, it has an A2 grill, with an angle iron front bumper.

I have no way to know if this is the correct data plate, but it is the one mounted on the dash (as opposed to on the floor over the dimmer switch).

Hello Brian.
just noticed the two dataplates on the latest vehicle. The Willys plate (Dec 63) says 7405-174** but I can't make out what the rest of the numbers are. Can you oblige, please? And sadly, I can't make out any numbers or date-of-delivery on the Kaiser plate. One of these plates could be original to the vehicle. Have you located a body-tag yet? Just wondering......

Hi Ken. Vin here.... The number on the Kaiser Jeep Corp plate is 7405-26918. Delivery is 05-64. There is no body tag. Between rust damage and welding on new metal, that's gone. The front right frame horn is missing just forward of the foreward suspension bolt hole. The frame to fender inner weld is a very heavy amateurs stick job, which likely distroyed the ID plate. The Willys plate appears to be a scrape piece a previous owner used to mount a 12vdc starter floor switch, which triggers a solenoid. I'll get you those numbers when I take it off.

Thanks for that, Vin.
That Kaiser would have had a hood number in the 2F-series, assuming it actually is a Kaiser-built vehicle. However, the hood number says 2N, which would have been a Ford M151A1 delivered early 1967. If it was a 67, it should have a BUDD plate on the firewall so if you haven't checked that area, you may well be lucky.....if it is still there. If there's no trace of it at all, then it is most likely a Kaiser with the hood from a later vehicle.

Thank you, Ken. There are a number of things that make me think it is a 151 tub. No BUDDS number is one. The steering wheel mounting bracket, the windshield hinges, and a number of other details all point to 151. The hood seems to be a replacement, as are the front fenders (God aweful job of welding on them). Clearly, I need to replace the dash. Fortunately, I have one. The rear panel needs to be replaced, as does the drivers floor, and the battery box floor. The frame is in surprisingly good condition. There is some rust through, but no signs it has been cut.

This week I sorted out the brake lines, replacing some of the hard lines and all of the rubber ones. I installed an A2 exhaust system. Had to cut three inches out of the long pipe, but it sees to work OK. I also pulled a used rear wire harness through. I also put new ujoints on the drive shafts.

Today I'm starting to reassemble the brakes, so I can get it off the lift and back on it's wheels. My goal is to get it running next week.

In the picture with the nice shiny muffler and the surprisingly clean transmission those frame rails look really sharp on the lower edges. Are they the original pieces? Just does not look like stamped sheet metal welded together.

Looks totally original, Rick. I can see no signs of any work being done or added metal. Whoever had this was a terrible welder, as evidenced by the way he welded on the replacement front fenders. The bottom is in pretty good shape, compared to other parts of the truck.

The tranny looks clean because I swapped out the power train. The engine in it had no head and was very rusty on the top end. The one we put in it runs and the tranny works.... Also had a the radiator boiled out and reconditioned..

The shinny muffler was sandblasted and painted..... The tail pipes were NOS.

I chased the threads on the drive shaft/u-joint bolt holes and put in all new replacement grade 8 bolts and lock.

Just cleaned up the brake parts and will put those in this afternoon.

And, just successfully got titles for this one and the 1970 Ford A2. Now I have two titled A2s and one titled M151.

Ok, Now that I have a few cups of coffee in me I can see the lip on the edge of the frame rail. I wasn't seeing that lip and that was what had me wondering.
