Different rear A-arms???
Good Day:
I am working on a 1967(?) M151A1 and have found that the right rear trailing arm has six backing plate bolt holes, but the left rear trailing arm only has four (the backing plate has six holes).
Any ideas?
I am inclined to drill two additional holes in the left arm...
Thanks
-Ken

Re: Different trailing arms???
When you say "trailing arm" are you meaning trailing arm as in M151A2? Or "A"-arm as in M151 or A1?ndcctrucks wrote:... have found that the right rear trailing arm has six backing plate bolt holes, but the left rear trailing arm only has four (the backing plate has six holes). -Ken
The backing plate with four holes is an early M151 plate.... pre-the strengthened rear "A"- arms.. The one with 6 holes is an M151A1 (or even A2) plate. How many rubber bump-stops does each arm have?

Re: Different trailing arms???
The A1 has swing arms and that is probably what you have and it sounds like you have a mixed set.

Re: Different trailing arms???
Sorry yes I mean "A" arms.
The 6-hole arm has two bumpers and the 4-bolt one has one bumper.
Thanks for the replies; I was guessing I had an old and a newer.
I guess as long as they have the same dimensions there should be no problem.
I may still drill two more holes and add a second bumper; will see when assembly time comes.
THANKS to everyone for the replies!

Re: Different trailing arms???
Ken will have to verify this but I believe the old arm is a weaker style of arm, If you have it apart you might want to try to source a later A1 swing arm.

Re: Different trailing arms???
Rick....spot on. The early "A"-arm was replaced by a high-strength arm with two bump-stops. The early arm was known to buckle under heavy load.rickf wrote:I believe the old arm is a weaker style of arm, If you have it apart you might want to try to source a later A1 swing arm.
NDCC......There's probably someone on this board who would swap you for the early arm and 4-hole backing plate. Why not post a message in the "wanted" section? Can't do any harm.

Re: Different trailing arms???
New rear arms can be bought from Red River Surplus. You must specify left or right. In 2012, they were $145.00 each. The A1 arm is a higher strength steel. They also took a smaller U shaped channel and welded inside the U shaped channel on each leg of the A arm and drilled out the end for six mounting bolts. Also buy a bushing kit if you go that route. If you have a backing plate with four holes, you can drill the plate to add the two extra holes also. Kevin.
