American Military Museum Los Angeles

Unread post by on-to-berlin » February 22nd, 2017, 4:21 pm

I was on a business trip last week in L.A. and had the time to visit the museum. It is outdoors and has lots of nice vehicles. However, most of them have seen better days. But nice to look at. Also they had a nice variation of M151 with original paint. For me that was very interesting since I am from Germany and if you see M151 with original paint then ist European MERDC but no a desert or a green variant.
Enjoy the pictures!

It's a shame that place like this cannot restore the vehicles but it all boils down to money. These are mostly private owners that collect tons of vehicles and declare museum status so they can skirt a lot of the rules and laws that allows them to keep all the stuff. Most of them have good intentions and fully plan to restore a few vehicles for display. Then, like most people that have the green disease they buy more and more vehicles and there is just no way they can finance a full restoration shop nor find the people to do it so they do what you see here. And hope for enough donations to keep it going. In the end most of the stuff ends up sold or scrapped in worse condition than it was when aquired as the money runs out or the owner dies and it is all auctioned off.

I have made more pictures. If you guys are interested let me know and I will post more. But it´s mostly other non m151 related ones.

Rick, I agree. However, the same happens if museums are funded by the government. At this museum it is the corps of engineers that is responsible and they obviously have other things in mind.

There are volunteers but then again it´s about motivation of volunteers... :D

The Corps of Engineers are pretty much just that, Engineers, and the government is not going to give them any money at all to do vehicle restoration work. I am surprised they are even allowed to run a museum with the budgets the way they are. Governments are the same all over, not just here. Surplus equipment is just that, Surplus. It is junk to them and they want nothing to do with it. When you look at it in the big picture it makes sense, they cannot keep spending and spending on stuff that does them no good at all. While interesting to look at historical vehicles have nothing to do with running a country. People forget history. Think about it, how many of you reading this can name any of the battles of WWI? NO GOOGLE!

I would like to see more pictures. Of course! Please post.

I hope you took more pictures of that M1 Combat Car. It's quite something to find one of those.

Cheers,
TJ

I worked with a guy who was what you could call a military historical genius. He can tell you every battle/ with details start to finish, every commander, and every date, going back to just about biblical times. And he is dead nuts accurate. As far as a worker? He is a gold seal boiler operator (nuclear certified) and he is about as wacky as they come, not what you would call a motivated worker.

I'm sure.

The really sad part is that if this is actually a military operation, in the end ALL of those vehicles are going to end up as scrap. Some GAO number cruncher is going to look at that place and say "What the hell is this?! Get rid of this junk right now!" And it will be gone. They won't even spend the money to sell it, they will just truck it to the nearest scrapyard.
I think that is why it is hard to get volunteers to work in a place like that. Think about it, if you were looking to volunteer at a museum would you go there? I would look at that and say to myself " If I go here and bust my butt on a project it is going to sit out here and rot with the rest of this stuff since there are not unlimited funds to repair all of this." There are hundreds of vehicles there, all in disrepair and no money for even one vehicle restoration. You know they are all headed for the junkyard sooner than later. And if it is a military operation they are not even allowed to sell the vehicles to save them. Thanks for the pictures, at least we have them for prosperity so we know someone did care enough to try at least.
