I've already seen it earlier. Clue - Verne Troyer.
Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
You've got the early trouser-ripper fuel cap fitted.

You have something sticking up in the middle of the hood where the hood hold down is. Can't tell what it is but it is not usually there. That and the brilliant white stars on your slightly faded finish.

Right, Rick! It's Sarge from the Disney Pixar film CARS. He's on a magnet, covering the opening that lets water sit on my oil cap (causing it to rust) and I'll have you know, those stars were blotted on with a sponge so as to not appear so brilliantly white as they might have been if I'd just sprayed them on.
And I was sure someone was going to note that I finally made a clean spot on my truck!!!

Yes, Ken, the trouser ripper is something I'd rather be without but that's what came with it. It says, "Non Vented," What is appropriate for the 1970? I have a cap without tabs in the Great Big Box Of Everything.
Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
Have a look in your big box and see if you have a vented cap like this one It's the exact cap for a pre-emissions A2.m3a1 wrote:Yes, Ken, the trouser ripper is something I'd rather be without but that's what came with it. If you are concerned about originality, then here's a guide:-
M151 models and all M151A1 models up to 1968. Use the vented cap with "stuck-up ears" and the raised lettering.
M151A1 models for 1968 and 1969. Use the vented cap with "no ears" and the raised lettering.
All Ford M151A2 and pre-emission-control AM General A2 models......use the "Milled-Edge" cap with the VENTED lettering..
All "emission-control" models........use.the "mouse-ear" cap marked "non-vented".
As you can see, the vented "mouse-ear" cap is not original to any version of the Mutt.
"Does it matter if I mix and match caps with tanks?". Well, yes, it does. Incorrect use of a non- vented cap can cause a vacuum in the fuel tank and the vehicle suddenly stops running as the fuel supply is cut off. And incorrect use of a non-vented cap (or a vented cap which has a blocked or inoperative valve) can cause a buildup of pressure in the tank and fuel pipes. This can lead to rupturing of the fuel-pump diaphragm (A2-series) with the fuel leaking into the engine sump. Something to be avoided !
If you are still losing sleep over this, I suggest that you stop inhaling those gasolene vapors. -Ken © The M151 Newsletter

Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
And too all of this I have one question, what is the purpose of the fuel tank vent line running to the air cleaner? Think about it.

Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
Well Rick, my guess would be that since the system was nominally designed for 21" for submergence without special preparations and since the air cleaner is quite a bit higher than the fuel cap, venting to the air cleaner makes sense ....or, as is so often the case, am I also wrong about that?
The cap I have at present is "non-vented."
Someone saw fit to swap the fuel tank cap on my truck...but why they selected the other cap, we'll never know but now that I've read Muttguru's original post (and DANG!...where does he get this stuff?!) my present cap would arguably be correct for the system...just not what it was originally delivered with. Despite the fact that the cap's tabs can present a problem to the operator while getting in and out, they certainly do make turning the cap a lot easier.
I presently have four different caps, none of which are the style Muttguru so kindly shared.
Out of the bunch that I have, the closest (functionally) that I can come to it is the mouse ears version capable of being either vented or non-vented...though I'm not sure it will fit within the confines of the shield around the filler neck. My other vent/non-vent isn't serviceable any longer.

Problem solved. Found one on eBay. ANOTHER clean spot! Sheesh!
Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
FINALLY, I am underway on getting this thing titled. Every time I had the money for the process, something came up. Paid my fee and I am submitting the documents I was asked to provide by mail. If all goes well, there will be an additional fee for a bonded title as my truck's paper trail ended long ago. Will keep you posted on the procedure and how this all turns out.
Cheers,

Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
We had an interesting discussion on caps for M series fuel tanks and if you have been following this thread I got some very good information from Muttguru and I finally got the correct cap for my truck and by "correct" I mean what cap it would have been issued with. I thought I'd put this all together in one post just so the casual reader could see at least some of the many variations that are out there. So here are a few pics for future reference and none of these caps are field-modified in any way (such as having the tabs cut down).

Re: Waking up a Texas M151A2
Did a little something on my truck today, despite the rather dreary weather. I finally repaired one of the battery cover's toggles which was missing the spring steel bit that hooks onto the hook. Rather than try and replace the whole thing, I borrowed that piece from another source. I put a pin through it to hold the new piece on (I could have just as easily used a nail) and spot welded it in place. It works perfect and hopefully, I've killed a rattle in the process.
Curtains and doors came in from Brent Mullins today. I can't wait to see how they look.
