Temp Guage

Unread post by PPanagakos » April 19th, 2017, 11:04 am

I have an M151A1 that I fixed up. Not restored as it is rewelded, but it came out pretty good. I have a newer power pack in it and it runs good. My last problem is the temp guage. I always let the Jeep get up to operating temp before I drive around in it. My temp guage usually gets stuck, and I have to tap it to get the needle moving up. Replaced the sending unit and the guage, and checked the wiring. Most of the time if I tap it while it's warming up, it will go up to the 180 degree mark, and I can see the thermostat open, so I know the engine is running at the right temp. Is this a common problem? And is there a fix? Doesn't hurt anything, just bugs me.
thanks

you have a weird practice with warming up the engine before driving. Should be common knowledge by now that this is the worst thing you can do. Start it and drive it.

I don't know about that, either way it warms up to the thermostat and then the water circulates. In reality once the oil has started to circulate the engine is ready to go but letting it warm up just sitting really does no harm as long as you do not leave the choke on. As far as tapping the gauge, if you wait a bit longer I am sure it will get there on it's own, you are just helping it along a bit. I have to do that with my gas gauge bit it sits on empty until it gets a wake up tap, or I rev the engine which vibrates everything awake.

Thanks for the replies. I was warming up the engine before driving because I wanted to see it go to operating temp. Was just trying to get the temp gauge to work right. I also get it to operating temp before I do a compression test, vacuum test, set timing and valve clearance. I'm not weird or stupid, but thanks for the advise anyway.

Number 5 on the Good Driver tag indicates that it is the drivers duty to Warm up vehicle prior to driving.
