Persistence pays off M718A1

Unread post by Hambone » June 10th, 2017, 12:04 am

I have had my eye on this jeep for about 5 yrs, now, I have been collecting M718 parts for about the same time as I have had a M718 for several yrs. now, tho it is fairly rusty. Got a call yesterday and the gentleman asked if I was still interested in his jeep, which is a M718A1, I told him I was definitely interested, he told me to come get it before he changed his mind. Well, I made the trip today ready to offer up to $7k, I promptly arrived to pick up the jeep , got it loaded on the trailer before we even discussed price, after a little chit chat, I asked what I owe him, his response was " I have another one coming, all I'm asking is for you to get it road worthy for me", to my dismay, he was serious, I was stunned, he wouldn't accept any cash. So a little about the jeep, it is a M718A1 which is uncut and rust free, has a little surface rust but as solid jeep as I have seen, had the extension removed, hardtop added, half of a rops added and insulation added to floors and fenders, needless to say, this is my dream jeep, soon to be converted back :D , here is a few pics.

All there but the air cleaner hose. And Hamm acres gets a bit more crowded.   I don't know about that deal he made with you. Sight unseen "Get it on the road for me". Wow, that could be a year long project in itself!

Wow, that's terrific. I hope you worked out exactly what "get it on the road for me" means!

Cheers,

The hose was in the truck :D , the brakes still work, the hardtop was screwed on with 3 machine screws in each side and only half the screws in the doors, so not many holes to plug. It was running fine 3 yrs. ago, he told me the jeep came from National Guard, where ever it was stored over the years must have been covered, I'm going to clean the fuel system and crank it. As far as the obligation, he said his other jeep was uncut and in the same or better condition, just been sitting up, bring it on, I'm in for the challenge for this return. :D

Well, worse case scenario I rebuild the whole thing, but he's an honest guy, he said he drove it into garage 5 yrs ago, I should have all the parts it will need. :D
Thanks for the comments, I know you guys realize how excited I am.

Poured a little MMO in the cyls. last night and spun it over, went back out this morning, spun it over a few more times, cleaned the plugs, removed the fuel line, shot a little gas in it, she busted right off. :D . Fuel tank is in great shape, just has 4 yr old gas in it, going to purge the fuel system, install carb kit, change the oil and she should be ready to run. Tested all of the lights, everything is working as they should, wiring harness in good shape, even the horn works, still has the mounting brackets on top of windshield for the top bow supports.

Is there a vin tag on this jeep? The contract # and the vehicle ID # has been scratched out on the data plate, Mfg, by Am. Gen. Corp, Nat. stock #2310-00-177-9256, no delivery date stamped, I looked in the usual places, nothing under the hood on firewall or on the tunnel, the horn says 10/73, any ideas?

You are out of luck if it is not on the tunnel. Number painted on the dash or under the hood? 73 may have still had hood numbers if you are careful, you know the drill.

Rick, I knew you might say that, more sanding. :x
M3A1, no title, that's why I need some Vin ID, not hard to title in Ark., State Police have to come check it out.

Pulled the carb off today not knowing what to expect, I was surprisingly clean, think I will spray it out and stick it back on.
